Large downloads cause whole system to freeze or crash
Hello,

while downloading large games (i.e. DOOM, The Witcher 3) my PC frequently completely freezes (not a 5 second freeze or something like that, but a crash, and without blue screen or reboot, just complete standstill).

I tried multiple things already:
- update/reinstall all third party drivers (graphics driver, network driver)
- reinstall steam
- check memory using MemTest
- run chkdsk on the HDD where I install my Steam games on
- disable all non-microsoft services (besides the steam client service - without this steam obviously won't start...)

The weird thing is: When downloading other large files, i.e. games via EAs Origin Platform (BF4 ~ 30GB, or Star Citizen (~30 GB) everything works fine - no crashes, no freezes. I have Windows 10 without any third party anti virus scanner, I'm only using Windows Defender and disabling it did not fix the problem. So something must be up with the way Steam downloads/installs the games. I need advise on how to fix this issue, as I cannot install DOOM for instance, because its 60 GB, so the opportunity to freeze/crash is quite high - and after each incident I have to verify the game files via Steam because DOOM (or any other large game I want to play) won't start as the crash/freeze corrupted the files. And especially with DOOM... after verifying the files it wants to download over 20 GB again - so enough time to just crash/freeze again...

Here are my system details:
- AMD FX 8350
- Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 AMD 970
- 3GB PowerColor Radeon HD 7950
- 8GB Corsair ValueSelect DDR3-1333 DIMM CL9 Dual Kit
- 450 Watt Cougar A-Series
- Windows 10 64 Bit, all updates installed

I hope you see my predicament and can give me advise on what to try.

I had same issue, but fixed it:
use windows search for: msconfig
on the 'BOOT' tab select "advanced options"
check the number of cpu cores that = ur cpu cores
reboot

WARNING:
cpu cores not theds or logicel cores!!!!
A 6 core AMD FX has only 3 cpu cores and 6 logical cores
you can verify using task manager.

this fix will also make some games that wont load, (no even an error of why) start working.
it is a bug with win10

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thank you!!! ive went through like 10 hard drives over the past year thinking they were failing or something and this did it for me, you're amazing!

Hello,
Not sure if some is still on this discussion board but I'm having the same problem. But its not with steam its with Epic Launcher. I'm trying to download a game that's 45 GB on to my HDD, and it downloads it for 10 mins then it stops and freezes. It doesn't crash my computer but I have to wait about 8 mins then Epic games launcher closes. I'm running a Ryzen 9 3900x, just built my pc a couple of weeks ago. I downloaded a couple of games but to my SSD and every thing was fine. Can't figure out the problem, would appreciate any help.

To anyone coming across this post I have found my fix for this issue. I ended up having two different antivirus softwares running at the same time. The app apart from windows defender is called 'Restoro'. Multiple antivirus softwares caused the crash so I was able to uninstall restoro and revert my pc to the way it was before I had it. This has fixed the issue and everything works fine now. Again, this was a specific case. Go check out reogaz post up a few comments /\

Oh yeah. Also an update on that from my side. It was having a third party firewall at all. Zone Alarm was significantly slowing down everything after a time by just being installed - it didn't even have to be switched on.
Heard same issues with Norton for people. Switched to default win firewall and now I have no slowdowns at all - something about third parties integrating with Kernel f's it up.

has anyone found a fix ? im having the same issue with my new 2tb HDD i have windows on a other drive witch is a SSD m.2 on board

yeah update pc with BIOS and driver and chipset from board support place.

as i recall from other games with AMD "AMD FX 8350" not sure about model nr, was caught in bug and need a BIOS update, because of this windows will work better and so will games,
this dont rulreout other issue with harddisk driver or cable or worst case, the longer you go back in time i bet , many can say SSD was not that good as they said they was , alot of firmware upgrades. so you could actual end up with alot of mixed problem on the same time from the past. and its here it get complicated then people mixup intel or amd issue and sametime bad SSD if we can call it that. dont forget this is lookling back at things with the lack of knowledge we did not have back then.

some never got issue with SSD other as me , kill a SSD apox every year, piece of junk. or should i say lack of stability.

and i bet you will hear many other point of view on the subject, lets not forget still new technology, and dont forget windows standard miss usage of disk and keep write to them, its a complcated issue , and SSD is much better today, and windows stop write to disk all the time after several expert have complain to MS old outdate ways.

you even see defrag app that did not see it was a SSD and start move all files, welcome to tear down a disk faster.

so old app can do more harm then good. ( its complicated as hell, gl with it anyway ) if you dont get it talk with other tech , it do require alot of technical understand most will not even explan others or waste time on even try explan it, could be rude and said read a book )
dont forget some have spend years on educations to try master all in how pc works, and other simple just read 3-7 books and is better then other that try to deep and get it all.

So in the menu it lets me choose from 1 to 8. My CPU, i5-9300H has 4 core. Do I choose 4 instead of 8?
