How do I disable Steam opening a window when I receive a chat message
Hello, I would like to ask about how to stop steam from creating these pop up windows when receiving a chat message. Thanks!

Are you asking as in you never want chat to appar ever?

Are you asking how to fix issue that new window opens for each chat you received, instead of tab keeping it all on one window?

Are you asking about notifications pop up when I game?

In your friends panel pop up, click settings cog wheel top right area > Notifications > Untick "When I receive a direct chat meesage". Or if you wanna removed flash windows check the Never box.

Nope. I'm asking about the CHAT WINDOW, not the CHAT NOTIFICATION. It always appears when I receive a chat message.

If it's about opening new window for each chat, instead of keeping it one window with tab.

Then this is a setting, open friend list, click on cog/gear icon, now somewhere there's a option that state opens new window if you have it on, ensure its off.

If not working, then something wrong with your client, can beta or non beta, or reinstall Steam.

- Try opt in, or out of Steam beta, top left corner, click on Steam > settings > account > click on button change, and either opt in, or out of beta.

- Reinstalling Steam, to keep games, and screenshots, head to where you install Steam, move these two folders, "Steamapp" and "Userdata" move these two folders outside the Steam folder, once done that, uninstall Steam, ensure Steam folders gone, if not delete it, then reinstall Steam, run it to download client, don't login just exit out of Steam, move back the "Steamapp" and "Userdata" folder back into Steam folder, if ask if want to replace click yes, and now launch Steam, and test to see if issue resolved.

I understand exactly what you want, and I want it too.

When I'm playing I DO NOT want a chat window ever popping and covering my game up just because someone wants to send me a message.

friends list settings > notifications > 'flash window when i receive a chat message: "never" - this worked for me, been looking for a fix to stop frames dropping when i got a message / invite and this window opened and started flashing, this is probably going to be the fix you want if nothing else works

Nothing listed in this thread addresses OP's request.
The problem is neither notification pop-ups or docking the chat to the friends list(lolwut?), it is the opening of a new window when a message is received, as the thread title states.

It's like everyone who replied to this thread was esl or something.
