Steam won't recognize any of my Xbox 360 Controllers
Hey all. Hoping to get some troubleshooting help here. I've got two Xbox 360 controller that haven't been used for a couple years. They still work when connected to my old 360. One is wired, one is wireless (battery pack). The home buttons blink when pressed. I put new batteries in the wireless one and the wired one is recognized by my PC when plugged into the USB port.

I've followed the 4 steps outlined here, to no avail. I simply get this message[i.imgur.com] in the controller settings in both Big Picture and regular mode. Not really sure where to proceed from here. Maybe there's some kind of Steam client problem or I need to update my BIOS?

Do the controllers work in non steam games?

Are you using the 360 adapter? You need the drivers and the adapter for the wireless one.

I wish I could try this but I don't have any non-Steam games. Is there a different way I could check for a PC response on the controller?

The wireless controller needs a receiver for Windows. You cant connect it to PC any other way, even with a usb cable since that only charges/provides power, it does not transport data.

For using a wireless Xbox360 pad on PC you need this:
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2

Honestly, as expensive as those are nowadays because they are no longer in production, you would be better buying a XboxOne pad for PC that costs 10 bucks more which has Bluetooth support and comes with a USB wireless receiver on top.

Here are the drivers :

https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-gb/d/xbox-360-controller-for-windows

And as Ogami said, You need that receiver. I have that one and it works perfectly. I got it free from Microsoft as a reward, many years ago and still working great :)!

Edit: Don't buy that cable, it's expensive lol. Buy a new controller with the cable already included, make sure it says it's for PC.

It costs the same as just the cable on its own!
