Random Steam keys are they legit?
^ Title I seem to be seeing Random Steam keys for sale on many sites including Ebay, sometimes it's like 20 keys for $5 or something.

I am just curious if these are legit, or how people even get these keys in the first place?

Like is it legal to buy these?

I'd advise against buying from any unauthorised seller.

There is always a risk involved so while taking the necessary care for your account, since i doubt you'd want to involved in a revoked key case, its your choice.

As a guide, if you are looking for 3rd Party key sites,

What's the worse that happens if you activate a key and it gets revoked?

The game simply gets removed from the library and you have to buy it again, or do you lose your entire Steam account if too many get revoked?

I heard about it, but i'd assume that all keys should be legitimate I mean if they are not legitimate how are people getting them to sell in the first place, because "Steam" or the publisher has to give out the keys in the first place for them to be legitimate?

And when a person buys a key, or something off Steam it's automatically activated on a users account so no Idea how they are being sold on sites as random keys?

We would like to assume all keys are legitimate but there is a small fraction of people that are out there that would sell the keys on such sites as eBay and a few others i will not include, they are bought and a chargeback is initiated hence a fraud attempt and this literally puts you in the middle of the drama.

Theres obviously no concerns regarding your account on the other hand, you basically lose one game.

Ah Okay that's great, but I am curious, how would it be possible for someone to do charge-back fraud in the first place.

Like I know what charge-back fraud is and how to do it, however Steam for example when I buy a game the game / key is immediately unlocked on my account, it's not like I can sell it?

Are these people buying the keys and frauding from other countries or something like no idea how that would even work?

Just trying to get a picture here before maybe buying ^-^.

You could perhaps create a new topic as your query is not related to this topic.

Distribution methods which the source varies, and there are heaps.

Steam is a one way ticket as they are the main supplier, they don't sell keys as it is directly from their system whereas the developer has the tools to generate the keys then they'll eventually land somewhere amongst all the 3rd party and keysellers.

And how the fraud takes place, a key is bought and sold as usual then it is sold again except that the person may have already activated the key or they manipulate it by replacing a letter or number which results in a duplicated or invalid.

Ah I see so basically people are hitting up 3rd party sites such as "Green Man Gaming" or "Game Billet" getting the key for real money, then filing a charge-back against the 3rd party, and the user who buys for $5 on a site for example who consumes the key gets it removed by the developer?

In this case going to assume that buying a key sale of like 100 keys for $10 on Ebay is likely a scam then, and why Ebay allows these type of products is quite weird.

Yes, there is heaps of other possibilities involved so you would be aware of the ropes that could have taken place.

Just check the user's feedback score anyway, i would advise.

Okay awesome thanks, I may buy a small pack for $5 it's no big loss, and if any of the keys gets revoked, i'll contact Ebay, and start a process to get all transactions like this removed entirely from the site due to fraud, would help cut down on that a lot.

There will most likely be no harm in buying them and using them however be cautious and use payment methods that can allow you to force a refund (like paypal) just in case the game keys get revoked or you get scammed.

Awesome thanks, I mean it's possible the keys come from a site such as "Humble Bundle" In fact a person can make profit buy subscribing multiple accounts on Humble Bundle, and reselling the keys I believe in which case it would be legitimate.

There could be more sites like Humble Bundle too.

Also I called Ebay to verify if I have issue if I can claim refund I mean its like $5 doesn't even matter to me though if a lot of people are indeed doing fraud there it's likely that they can remove the sellers which have a very high score, but it's also possible that they are indeed using Humble Bundle for example, and they keep / Sale the good new releases / games for example "Tomb Raider" that was in the past then take all the indie games and sell the codes across multiple subscriptions to Humble Bundle i'd think.

Indeed, in most cases you might end up with duplicate keys of games, which at some point has more or less been priced at 0 cents. Best case scenario, much like lotto, you might end up with a game worth a couple bucks. Would only advise you to buy one of those packages if you don't mind throwing 5 bucks down the drain for a learning experience, which you really don't need.
