Although lately I've been happier at 1200 dpi or 1800 dpi depending on the game and how important precise aiming is. Lower DPI does seem to help somewhat in the precision of aiming. High DPI does let you turn quicker and that's probably great for games with a frenetic pace and less precise aiming mechanics. Low DPI does generally let you do an easier job with aiming.
In a game like TF2 I used to play most classes at 3,000 dpi, but I would switch to 2,000 dpi for sniper.
And a lot of it comes down to preference, I haven't been playing too many multiplayer shooters so even if my current preferences are less than optimal I don't need to fight about it.
I expect different games favor one or the other.
