sending messages to non-friends

today someone sent me a message and when i went to reply, a notification came up and said my account does not have permission to message non-friends. does any one know the reason behind this? or a way i can fix it so i can message non-friends? please only serious answers

It is possible to send messages to people, who are in the same group chat as you.

it wasnt group chat. i sent friend request to someone and they messaged me today and messaged me yesterday. it looked like the regular chat box. i could not reply

then they accepted, tried to talk to you, you didn't reply, and they deleted/blocked you.

pls dont assume what i did or didnt do. but your answer makes sense. they friended me long enough to ask me a question and then insult me. but not long enough for me to answer back i guess

You are mistaken. I received TWICE a message from people that were not my friends and were not in my groups. They came with a notification from Steam informing me that JOHN DOE (I don't remember the username) wanted to send me a message and he is not my friend, something like that (I don't remember the exact words, but that isn't the point).

So, my question is: if others did it with me, how can I do the same with others?

that and they literally had to been in groups
(steam hides groups your in unless you go into the full steam chat window in the browser. )
you are def in a group or you added this person and they removed you after talking
it's the only way period...people can't just randomly message you without one of the two methods.
