Normaly a URL is a link to and has the icon of the host it is referring to?
Go to the folder where the .exe is make a shortcut of it pin to desktop.
Example: steam://rungameid/451020
It's a problem i had before reinstalling windows 10, some months ago.
I saw weird manips supposed to restore icons but it's totally esoteric, plus it doesn't work.
Like... Deleting explorer thumbnail cache.
I tried creating a new desktop icon from the steam game list but it makes a shortcut with no icon right away, while, after installing games, they about-always have the correct icon, which is lost when desktop refreshes.
And once this happens, even making the shortcut again from gamelist in steam won't fix the icon.
And like i said, even if i put a replacement for the globe icon from the original exe, it still resets after desktop refreshes.
And why i doubt it have anything to do at all with Fences is because even if the icons are on desktop, they may get their icon off.
That should change them all back.
Maybe it's caused by Windows 10, but Steam cannot find the icons when i re-create a shortcut for an affected game to the desktop, so maybe it's both steam and windows that conflicts at some point when it comes to storing information in the url file.
Tho, i confirm, dropping the game URL in my browser didn't restore the icon, and i don't even see why it could've.
Tho, the posting person's issue is with the fact that shortcuts are .url instead of .lnk. I feel fine with .url shortcuts and believe it's ingenious from Steam. The real only issue i have is with those shortcuts's remembrance of the location of their related game icons.
B.t.w., URL and LNK files are very similar and stores icon information about the same way, i assume.
.LNK files can be opened in Wordpad b.t.w. and so are .url files.
Steam shortcuts text reads as this:
"[{000214A0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
Prop3=19,0
[InternetShortcut]
IDList=
IconIndex=0
URL=steam://rungameid/451020
IconFile=D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Battle Chasers Nightwar\BC.exe
HotKey=0"
A broken steam shortcut reads as this:
[{000214A0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
Prop3=19,0
[InternetShortcut]
IDList=
IconIndex=0
URL=steam://rungameid/225540
IconFile=D:\Steam\steam\games\d46bbe535033dac16ab374fa41f6f3099ef0c229.ico
Now, i'll check if the file exists for "Just Cause 3"
And YES, the file exists... But it just seems like it isn't applied the way it should...
What i noticed is that the url file's link to icon file isn't broklen but that windows seems to forget the icon while the icon exists at the pointed location.
