Here on the PC it has the values i did set.
.....,"spellcheck":{"dictionaries":[""],"dictionary":""}}
why should it be overwritten if the filename is "UserPrefs.json"?
0. Close Steam
1. Make a copy of the file and delete the file.
2. Start Steam and look if it gets created. (If not, then restore your backup file)
3. Close Steam
4. Edit the file and look if it is working again.
Thank you for your answer. You are correctly assuming that I was in the macOS environment because of my nickname, but in fact I am actually playing every game on my iMac, yes, but within Windows 10 environment, so I am actually using Steam Client App in Windows 10 at 64-bit.
Moreover, I actually am without spellchecking active since THIS WAY it has become the only choice of some usefulness. Should I insert any value and saving the json file, Steam will always change it back to "it" although I am using the OS and Steam Client App themselves in english. This behaviour is very odd!
Anyway, thanks for your help.
0. Click the wheel on the upper right. (Settings menu)
1. Look under "Chat"
2. Disable spellcheck in chat message entry (i have set it to "off")
So I installed Steam App from scratch. I have therefore peaked into the mentioned .json preferences, and have found that the language for US English, must be written with capital letters, as from the following example: "en-US"). I have added italian as "it" - "spellcheck":{"dictionaries":["en-US","it"] -, saved, and relaunched Steam.
Seems it's working good. Now the system corrects my spelling both in english AND in italian.
Just wanted to say that.
Grazie, just tried it out and can confirm it works flawlessly.
"spellcheck":{"dictionaries":["en-US","de"]
Valve should really add some check boxes into the settings. Can't be that big of a deal.
Yeah, doin' it for every (!) word that "spell checking" doesn't recognize? Honestly?
That's a bunch of useless work.
Not to tell to do it for every (!) word other than english.
Please go on, nothing to see here..
Yeah, the language code has to be exact, including caps. It seems the first part is always in lowercase and the second part is always in caps. Here's a list: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/openspecs/office_standards/ms-oe376/6c085406-a698-4e12-9d4d-c3b0ee3dbc4a
