Disable steam chat from opening every time I start up

I don't want to stop steam from starting during windows startup - I only want to stop the friend list from opening automatically every time. It's rather annoying. Has anyone figured out how to do this? I don't see it in the friend options.

close the friends list, then close Steam. That should save the size, location and state of the friend's list. Then reopen Steam.

I'd like to know how to stop it too. It's annoying the hell out of me, coming up every time when it's just.not.wanted.

yeah this is dumb, I don't have steam friends, don't even want any! Now this dumb chat thing is forced upon me. Lame Steam, very lame.

The steam friends list popup is super annoying. I've deactiaved all the things in the settings to get the frickin list to stop and screwed up my normal friend notifcations. why they don't have it set as a menu setting is beyond me. Steam stop spaming my crap!

Old question, but people will still find this today, and Steam updated a fair bit since 2018, so: if you're still running into this, open the friends list, then click the gear icon to go to the friends list settings (not the Steam client settings), view the "Chat" settings, and turn off "Remember my open chats".
