Disable new UI without shortcut
Steam launches on startup for me, so I don't use a shortcut. Is there any way to add the "-nofriendsui" to the launch if you're not doing it with a shortcut?

yes

start -> run/search -> regedit
browse to
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
edit "Steam"
add
-silent -nochatui -nofriendsui

What if we ... ummm.. Don't run Steam when the computer starts?

Steam supposedly reverts that registry change. Turn off run steam on startup in the settings, and put a shortcut in the startup folder.

If you don't have it auto-starting, right click on the shortcut you use to launch Steam and select Properties. Add the "-nochatui -nofriendsui" flags at the end of the Target field.

The "-silent" flag causes Steam to start minimized to the system tray. If launching from a shortcut then you presumably want to interact with it.

Thanks for the fix! Hope Valve makes this an easily accessible feature soon. I was about ready to disable Steam on startup.

Thanks for this. Here is another example of companies making decisions that are not about whats good for the user but good for them. They want to force this in front of your face each time the computer starts. If everyone behaved like that it would take us ages to first close down all the ♥♥♥♥ that starts up so we can actually do what we want on our pc's. WTF. Just the fact that i have to edit the registry to fix this rubbish.

"YES!!!!" I must also agree that you are a genius!! I would have NEVER figured that out. Shame on Steam for doing something so stupid without an OFF switch....THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Well it appears I spoke too soon. Steam indeed reverts it. Bast ards.....I really really really hate Steam..

How are you starting Steam? That only governs Steam when it starts up after a reboot. If you're using a shortcut or the Start Menue you'll need add the "-nochatui -nofriendsui" flags to those.
