Workaround No Steam on WinXP
Has anyone figured out a way to make steam still run and work on Windows XP past the end of the year?
Escrito originalmente por Null_User:
The problem with Steam is that it uses Internet to validate games, even if you place full copies of them in the correct folders. And while it does so, it may also try to update itself. And as stated before, even offline Steam will try to access the Internet to update itself, even through metered connections. Heck, I even had the experience of a fully offline computer eventually refusing to open Steam because it needed to go online.

Unless the copy protection gets in the way I expect Omega?
I only have issues with DRM in modern games. Ubisoft titles which use Uplay for example.

And you can buy many retro titles via GoG without DRM and patched to run on modern systems.

Anyway, it's been stated that steam has to connect to the internet occasionally no matter what. And when it does, it will auto-update to a new version that won't work on XP anymore. So, there's nothing that can be done and this will auto-update later and then XP is dead.

So, thanks for helping us figure this out.. this topic is done and there's nothing we can do for it.

Thanks everyone. I'll go pick it as an answer.

Well, I was also gonna say that OP did not ask for how secure or how up to date XP is. BUT, to answer OP's question, I really doubt you will find too many people interested in keeping up XP running with Steam here, and they are simply stating their reasons why people would be disinterested on it.

According to their announcement
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1558-AFCM-4577
it is not only Windows XP that is dropped but Windows Vista too.

Which means that they slowly phase out older operating systems as newer systems offer more options.

I do not have anything against them offering additional eyecandy in the SteamClient that I do not need and that older operating systems are not able to display. Simply make that optional and people with old hardware able to opt out of more eyecandy and keep the old simple and working look.

I can understand too, that new games are not developed with old operating systems in mind and that Steam will and can not make them available for Windows XP or Vista.

However I do not understand that with their planned update in 2019 they will actively prevent already bought and paid games from running on the same system that they were bought for and did run on for years.

So while I believe we can't fully close the door on something, I believe the reaction of those who responded to this thread may be the collective feeling of this forum on it. So my honest advice to OP would be to look somewhere else. Where that somewhere else is? I don't know. But I'd also advice not looking too deep nor into hack territory for an answer. The associated risks are not worth it.

EDIT: Another advice would be to get non Steam games. Like the above advised GoG.

That certainly is an option. But how do I keep playing my already bought Steamgames? Running only without administratorrights so that Steam does not update itself to the new client and playing in offline-mode?

The critical question at this point is, will the update eventually happen before launch, or while the client is running. The latter case might possibly be contained through removal of temporary files and such.
Guys, this topic is done and I marked it resolved. Please stop replying. I might have to request a mod lock it if you can't read on your own.

I was actually hoping I could downgrade to XP from Vista for the sake of CPU performance but I guess that's thrown out the windows :(

You will probably only run CSGO and stuff so try a lightweight Linux distribution instead.

You can unsub from a thread on the top right side of the page.

my specs suck so CSGO(and Fortnite for that matter) is out of my grasp and yes I have experience with Linux so it shouldn't be too difficult though all I have experience with is Ubuntu Mate on my RPi 3

I don't care about notifications. It's done. I've already asked a mod lock this. You people can't even read apparently.

I have just posted a suggestion in "Suggestions/Ideas" for a install/run only client for XP/Vista https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/10/1762481957309600261/

It will be interesting to see what, if any, response that gets.

I am sorry but this is a community forum and not a question and answer forum. You don't "own" a thread here, anyone is free to jump in and discuss the given topic.

Just don't post on it anymore and it will die within a few hours.

Be glad they're giving a warning 6 months out. That's not typical for Valve.

I am really sorry. The announcement about the upcoming shutdown for XP PCs kind of throws me into panic mode and makes me look everywhere for a spark of hope. With most users more occupied with the new chat interface and, as seen, Windows XP not being popular around here anymore, there's only few threads, that care about the subject (no wonder, Valve does not want to put much effort into supporting it anymore). And I cling on every single one.
I see, that it's against your wish, but I have some difficulties right now staying rational with yet another little step, the internet is taking away from the place, I was once used to. Please try to have a bit of sympathy, if I still post in here.
In return, if my XP can somehow still run Steam in a year, I promise, I'll tell you.

The current state of things. I have:
- copied a pre-monday Steam version onto another Windows XP device, that has not had it before
- have been able to login before the launch update (which could mean, regular logins might be possible without updating)
- did the update
- undid the update
- Steam still running in the state of last week in offline mode!

There
Is
Hope!

P.S.: From what I assume, it is mandatory to have Steam installed and launched at least once on the Windows XP/Vista computer before 2019, as it seems, you need one successful launch under a current client to fall back onto an older one.
