Preventing the chat window from opening on startup
How can I NOT have the chat window opening itself over whatever I'm doing at the moment every time Steam is starting up? I don't wanna chat with my friends, I just want to not get distracted by whatever I'm currently doing. Where can I turn this "feature" off again?

This is solved now, but you will need to actually update Steam for the "remember open chat" option to be displayed in the chat settings. The default is "On" but can be turned "Off" now. This has only appeared in an update a few hours ago.

That seems to be the pop-up regardless of the settings in your interface.

Same here, I do not want it to pop up upon booting up. I can't find the off switch anywhere and it's already pissing me off.
Makes me pretty angry each time... :Crazydemon:
Yeah, me to, no tricks then? I don't mind the new friends/chat UI itself, just no need to pop up on steam startup!
Might be better to report it, it's pretty annoying.
came looking for the same, +1

Edit: I think I found a solution https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/1762481957308971441/

That disables the new UI completely, I deliberately pointed out that the new UI itself isn't a problem to me, to avoid being referred to that command line option, there's a massive thread already discussing that solution and opinions on the new UI.

[edit]Now that makes no sense, but now I don't get the friends popup on starting Steam? I just tried that command line switch to confirm it did what I expected, but now that I removed it, the new friends window doesn't pop on startup? So is that a quirky interaction, or just a coincidence?

[edit2]Ok, now it pops on steam startup, if and only if it was open when steam was last shut down, not unreasonable behaviour. So is their a bug in storing this setting, which sorts itself out once steam is launched with the new UI disabled?

That's just disabling the friend's UI.

That is not a solution if you still want the new UI.

As it is, you currently cannot disable the pop-up.

I came here just to see if there was a solution, looks like there isn't? :steamfacepalm:

Valve, please fix... It is really annoying :steamsad:

See if the odd fix which seemed to work for me works for you? ie, use that command line switch once, then after that it only pops if the window was up when you last exited steam.
It's quite the annoyance...
This is ridiculous. Get rid of this crap new "feature" immediately
god I hate it RAGE
Same here. It is beyond annoying. I would be working on something completely different and then Steam's friend UI would just pop out of nowhere. And Steam forces it to be open since there is no way to force or command it to not open as far as I know of. This new update was supposed to make Steam more streamlined but it seems that they have once again failed.
Valve, pls fix
Don't need chat. Don't want chat. Didn't ask for chat. Make it go the #%^& away. I'm not social. If I wanted chat I'd play PS4.
