Preventing the chat window from opening on startup

How can I NOT have the chat window opening itself over whatever I'm doing at the moment every time Steam is starting up? I don't wanna chat with my friends, I just want to not get distracted by whatever I'm currently doing. Where can I turn this "feature" off again?

I never doubted that.

Still, that's a workaround for people with crashing issues. It might be removed later when the old chat will have to stop working for whatever reason.

Stupid chat window opening on every system start is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying. I can't believe companies/developers still make design decisions this dumb and just push it out the door anyway. It's almost as if they have zero UX usability QA. Everyone just assumes that if the company is big, they sure know what they are doing. But learning from endless idiocies from Google and many others, that sure as hell isn't the case.

This worked for me. I restarted Steam and no chat pop-up. I restarted my computer. Steam started but still no chat pop-up.

Go to taskbar -> Steam -> Settings -> Interface -> Set taskbar preferences -> Check "Offline" and uncheck "Friends"

Don't need to do any fancy regedits or shortcut tags.

For all you people who are like me and track your friends IRL instead of on Steam :)

Same here, I do not want it to pop up upon booting up. I can't find the off switch anywhere and it's already pissing me off.

I'm also looking for an off switch.

When they redid the UI, an off switch should have been the first thing they added.

This is just blatantly bad design. When you build a machine, the one thing you make sure it has is an off swtich. But the Steam developers apparently just like annoying millions of users and don't give a crap.

And it becomes more interesting when most of the people in this thread not using ANY of chat software for games at all. Why the ♥♥♥♥ should I care about steam competing with discord if I'm not using any and playing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ solo?
Btw one game where I used voice chat is PD2 and I used steam voice chat - was too lazy to setup/run anything else. So with this stupid feature they only making me switch to discord from steam

Just to weigh in my vote on next update. I hate when there is a lack of control, and presumptious apps. If I want chat, I will open it separately!
Steam is first and foremost, for running games. It is far down the list on coming close to a a social media platform.
Include the option to Disable Chat on Startup!

steam icon → friend → setting button on upper right in friend list → turn on memorize open chat.
Then close the friend list, it will not be displayed automatically next time.

Me too, but I had to close open chat messages (even the empty message column), so that only the friends column showed!

I came here from a search result looking at how to disable this new chat upon Windows start-up......I'm annoyed by it and close to removing Steam from my auto start-up list if it doesn't get it's act together within a few days and stop this.

! almost did exactly the same, only in my case a friend pointed me here.
