Preventing the chat window from opening on startup

How can I NOT have the chat window opening itself over whatever I'm doing at the moment every time Steam is starting up? I don't wanna chat with my friends, I just want to not get distracted by whatever I'm currently doing. Where can I turn this "feature" off again?

This is ridiculous! VALVE!!!! Please fix this! For the time being I disbled Steam running on startup.

steam icon → friend → setting button on upper right in friend list → turn on memorize open chat.
Then close the friend list, it will not be displayed automatically next time.

I hate having this feature pop up. valve, please give us an easy option to disable this opening on startup.

Hello, I was wondering if someone from STEAM might be able to answer a question for me. Why was the auto activation on CHAT put in in the first place? I can see the obvious down side, all the annoyed customers. But what benefit does STEAM get from doing this? I can't see how this auto CHAT feature would make STEAM $1 and I can see how angry customers might boycot , not buy anything for a while could cost them lost profits.

I can *not* turn it off??? I came here to look for an option when I couldn't find one but there isn't one? This is just ridiculous.

Steam, please, fix it. I want to launch Steam at start-up and the new friends-UI is fine-fine-who-cares. But that forced open of the chat window at computer start-up is annoying as heck. If someone wants it to auto-start, that's what options are for. Heck, have it be a default setting if you insist but at least let people turn it *off*. Because not having that option is just evil.

TheLostSwede, could you tell which option to turn on? I interpreted the message you quoted as "in the Friends list click the cogwheel icon, in the opening window choose General tab, and there turn on the 'remember my open chat' option, last close the friends list window". However, that didn't work. It still opens at start-up so I guess some other option then?

If you've found a working solution, please help. This "new feature" is so annoying...

Yeah, I hate the pop window every time I turn on my computer. Was thinking just to disable Steam on start up now, which I've had enabled since I built my first gaming PC.

I like Steam to start automatically to DL updates if necessary but I like even more that it requires the USER to click on an icon to actually open a window.

Valve, if I didn't want the Steam client opening a window every time I booted my computer, why the hell would I want a chat window popping up constantly? What a terrible idea. Imagine if every app that was enabled on start up opened it's own little pop up. Our PCs would be infested with pop ups. This sets a terrible precedent. Hopefully, just a mistake.

I came here from a search result looking at how to disable this new chat upon Windows start-up......I'm annoyed by it and close to removing Steam from my auto start-up list if it doesn't get it's act together within a few days and stop this.
