Voice calls not connecting.
This isn't specific to the most recent patch. However now that voice chatting in group chats is easier it's more obvious that it isn't working.

Whenever I try connecting to a group voice chat room it says I'm connecting until it eventually drops out altogether. This has been happenign for awhile but I don't know what changed on my PC to cause it to do so.
I use a webcam mic for voice chat and monitor speakers. I know both work as when I test them in the steam settings both work.

It shouldn't be software firewall issue. However I don't have any manual ports forwarded for my router as it's default settings already open ports for steam. It is an old router though so I'm wondering if the voice ports for Steam have changed? Or if there are any known windows 10 settings (such as within internet explorer) that would hinder my ability to connect. (as I tend to lock down internet explorer given that I don't use it.)

Edit: forwarded all relavent ports via Windows firewall and the router... nothing works.

Any help would be appreciative. Thanks!

My router is not blocking any ports. my computer is on DMZ.

Same here, opened port 27015, because Port Forward Network Utility test returned "port closed" result. I also listed my IP to DMZ (no router firewall protection) so it could not restrict connection. Restarted Steam with no luck. I can't still connect, most likely the ISP problem then.

I contacted Steam support explaining the situation (before previous testing), got this response:

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out to us and I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing this issue with Steam Voice Chat.

You'll first want to visit following article and follow all of the troubleshooting and configuration steps:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2598-RTZB-6114

If you are still experiencing it after following those steps, please create a report in the official Steam Chat Discussions with a brief description, the steps that can be taken to reproduce it, as well as any other information that seems relevant.

You may also need to work with a local PC specialist in your area to help troubleshoot and isolate the underlying issue.

1. There needs to be an application (service) listening on that port, accepting the incoming packets, and only after that a port checker can see if a port is open.

Use this piece of tool to listen to that port on your computer: http://www.rjlsoftware.com/software/utility/portlistener/download.shtml

2. most of the online port checkers only check for TCP port, whereas Steam uses UDP 27015.

3. disable your DMZ, you're exposing your machine literally to the whole Internet. Steam's VoIP or any other VoIP "shouldn't" require a DMZ to work.

4. which country do you live in and have you tried connecting to the Steam VoIP through a VPN? it worked for most of us.

5. Valve should do something like Discord did in terms of connections. unlike Steam, Discord uses a range of ports rather than a specific one so this way if for example a port is closed then it will try a different one.

OpenVPN, and it sounds like too much work[superuser.com] for normal users.
its working for you bro?
I was thinking... If you can use your cellphone in theory you can disable your mobile data, connect your usb cable, connect your cellphone to your wifi, and enable usb thetering, that easy way everything should work too.

Just tested, it works, and you're using your own wifi, patch until you can get a new router.

I don't understand why forwarding ports doesn't work yet...

It's easy using Windows 10, there is a cheap trick, and it's working without even a VPN, but you will have to disable it (easy to do too, and changes remains saved) all to use steam normally or to use a public network.
This works for me, you can add a VPN, or even connect a cellphone via usb, to keep using your own wifi (Yes, it works for me, using my own wifi, but using the cellphone as a USB router, this is easy, wifi sharing, share via usb while your USB is connected to your PC). No matter what, VPN, or cellphone, you need to make it public (default for these kind of connections)
  1. Make your active internet connectiong PRIVATE (check tutorial, easy to do)
  2. Open "Windows Defender Firewall" from the control panel
  3. Click in advanced settings in the left menu
  4. Right click on the left side "Inbound Rules", New Rule, a new rule wizard will appear:
    • Select Program and next
    • Select Steam from the steam folder
    • Select BLOCKthe connection
    • Left "Public" unticked, and only that one, check "Public" and "Domain"
    • As name, I recommend to name it "1 - Something" to have it on top of your list
  5. Repeat step 4, with these steps:
    • Select Program and next
    • Select "All programs"
    • Select BLOCK the connection
    • ONLY check "Public", leave the other two unticked
    • As name, I recommend to name it "1 - Something" to have it on top of your list
  6. Right click on the left side "Outbound Rules", New Rule, and the wizard appears again:
    • Select Program and next
    • Select Steam from the steam folder
    • Select BLOCK the connection
    • Left "Public" unticked, and only that one, check "Public" and "Domain"
    • As name, I recommend to name it "1 - Something" to have it on top of your list
  7. Right click on the left side "Outbound Rules", New Rule, and the wizard appears again.
    • Select Program and next
    • Select Steam from the steam folder
    • Select ALLOW the connection
    • ONLY check "Public", leave the other two unticked
    • As name, I recommend to name it "1 - Something" to have it on top of your list

If you wish to disable the rules, you can right click them on the advanced settings, and disable.

Or you can simply get a new router that allow you to disable the firewall and to REALLY forward UDP ports.

I can't understand a thing with all these spelling and grammar mistakes.

Left "Public" unticked, and only that one, check "Public" and "Domain"

wut!

Guys, I managed to use the voice chat with VPN (PureVPN - https://www.purevpn.com) just for the steam, i.e., the rest of my applications, including games, is outside the VPN.

Purevpn has an option called split tunneling, which allows you to use VPN only for selected applications (in this case only for steam).

So, voice chat is using VPN and working and the rest of the computer is outside the VPN and does not suffer from lag.
