control being identified in the wrong way
Before this new update, my control (which is generic), was always identified with control configuration of xbox, there it worked in all games. After the update it happened to be identified with PS3 control configuration, and with that it is not working in some games, I tried everything.

First I noticed that this was only in steam beta mode, so I took it, after this new steam client update this problem came back.

Can someone help me?

It's supposed to be recognized as DS3, if it's a dualshock 3 controller. That's good. You'll just have to set up steam controller config for some games. Some games have native ps controller support (such as PSNow)

Having the same-ish issue
my controller is a generic gamepad and it has always worked like that. now it is being identified as a PS3 controller and I keep having problems like the normal d-pad being in "turbo mode" all the time. Same happens with another generic gamepad I have (so it's not a problem with my controller)
for games like Sonic Mania where I highly prefer to use the d-pad, instead of the analog stick, it becomes unplayable. Did opt out of beta for this reason only and now they push it for the main client without a proper fix, didn't think that would happen. It's a shame.

I ended up losing my custom bindings because the new update decided my third-party PS4 controller was a PS3, and surprise, all my settings were for a 4.

Im on the same trouble, please help

Same problem here. Controller is being identified as PS3 instead of generic, and despite having "primary action button" in controller config where X button would be, games act as if I pressed triangle button and vice versa.

Also, controller input no longer counts as input activity, making PC go idle while I'm playing.

My fightstick was working fine until this new update, it was being identified as a Generic Gamepad and now it is being identified as a PS3 controller. Because of this stupid bug I can't play Dragon Ball Fighterz with my fightstick

I have managed to solve, just go in to manage game> control options, activate the option "use steam configuration for non-steam controls" and now just configure it in manage game> control settings, you have to do it for every game that your control isnt working

Yeah i just figured it out too, on your Game Library you have a bunch of links on the right side of the screen, if you have a controller plugged in, Controller Configuration should pop up, click on it and you will find a bunch of different configs, find the right one and apply to your controller and should work. The only problem is you have to do this for every single game manually it doesnt save from game to game.

Having this issue as well. I have a Shanwan PS3 which worked great before the update. I used the Generic option, becasue the PS didn't work with this knockoff. Now it's like 1 out of 10 games recognizes it, although it seems to be properly recognized by the Steam itself as a PS3 controller.

That's the response from the support, actually it's a general issue and already working on it,

Hello,

I apologize for the delay.

This is a known issue, and is currently being worked on. In the meantime, please attempt this workaround.

First, please enable both Xbox and PS4 controller support. Then, navigate to a game in your Big Picture and select a game. From here, please apply a community configuration for an Xbox controller.

This can be done by browsing the community configurations, pressing the 'Show Other Controller Types' key, and then selecting specifically an Xbox Controller Configuration. After that, please re-test your issue. If that doesn't work, please attempt the same thing, but with a Play Station 4 Configuration.

Thanks for using Steam,
Cole

This has been going on for quite some time apparently and has ruined my dream of building a steam powered cuphead arcade. Generic USB Joysticks are labeled PS3 controllers. No proper fix in sight?
DirtEtb Sep 13, 2018 @ 1:48pm
It's fixed now, whatever i got a Xbox One Controller and i can play better.
JLglobal Sep 14, 2018 @ 8:37pm
It is not fixed, I am using generic arcade joystick emulators in a custom cabinet I built. They are still being recognized as playstation 3 controllers and I have yet to be able to play the game without all of the common issues (automatic player 2 joining and not being able to navigate menus / store / equip screen, etc,.) I have asked for a refund on the game and must start over with a new platform.
