Steam Disk write error when preallocating (SSD)
Hi guys, everytime I try to download games like PUBG, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Mordhau or Resident Evil " Remake on my SSD my Steam will show after a few seconds while preallocating Disk write error. It shows "An error occurred while installing MORDHAU (disk write error) : C:\...\Mordhau\Content\Paks\pakchunk20-WindowsClient.pak". And it is always a game with those pakchunk files. I tried every Solution on Steam and even a fresh windows 10. The SSD is complete new and when downloading Star Wars via Origin it works, it's only Steam where it doesnt work. Sry for the bad english and I hope you guys can help me

open command prompt/powershell as ADMIN

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
chkdsk /f
wmic
diskdrive get status

if an error comes up lemme know.

do each line one at a time, and don't try to enter another command while previous thing is still going.

what kind of SSD specifically? and was it bought from a reputable source?
its a Samsung SSD 860 EVO 250GB and yes it was bought from a Electronic Hardware store. Everything else works fine just the download on Steam with .pak files.
CS:GO works, Blacksquad works
i also have a problem
open powershell in admin again, try

diskpart
list disk
select disk #(choose your SSD, which ever # it is on the list)
attributes disk clear readonly

Are you running Powershell as Admin?

This argument should erase "readonly" on your SSD so you can write files to it normally. sometimes Program Files is a little too protective.

Yes i tried even cmd as admin
Before you do this, backup your registry
  • Windows key + R type regedit and hit enter.
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control
  • Under Control, find StorageDevicePolicies. If it's not there then create one by yourself. Right-click on Control go to New-> and then choose Key. Then, name the new key as StorageDevicePolicies.
  • Highlight StorageDevicePolicies and then right-click on the blank in the right window. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it as WriteProtect.
  • Double-click the WriteProtect entry and change its value to "0". Then, click OK.
  • Reboot PC and try to do the download again.

New SSD's can fail out of the box. It's rare but it can happen.
Open computer and right click on your SSD and chose properties.
On the tools tab click on error checking and check both boxes.
If it says it needs to restart to do the tests click on start on next reboot.
Reboot to start the check.
After it finishes and loads back to your desktop it should display the results.
Post the results here.

If all else fails, you might have to bite the bullet and do a fresh install of windows.
