ACCESSIBLE GAMING - ACCESSIBLE GAMES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
Hi,

I am a stroke survivor in my 70s. I suffer from paralysis of one side of my body and aphasia, a communication disability that impairs my ability to write or type words (my son sits with me and helps me write messages like this one) and use a mouse. As well, I suffer from sensory overload a lot.

My son has found some point & click games that I find less challenging to play such as 'Pilgrims' and 'Silence'. 'Botanicula' would be another example of a semi-accessible game for me although the puzzle element (e.g. knock a leaf off a branch, let it float down into a knot in the branch, return to the knot in the branch, blow, watch the leaf rise in the air, chase it down, collect it, walk to another area and add the leaf to an object that then flies away allowing access to another screen, etc...) is VERY challenging as I don't have a lifelong experience of gaming. I use a TOUCHSCREEN monitor so I don't need to bother with a mouse and the games I play must be compatible with a touchscreen. These games allow me to simply point and click to play without complicated (for me) maneuvres with a controller or a keyboard.

Can anyone else suggest other games (high-rated and beautiful like the examples above) that involve pointing and clicking without any other type of gestures?

Also, I searched for disability in all the forums and came up with NOTHING! Seems gaming has a long way to go in terms of accessibility? Is that accurate? I'm new so I'm just learning.

Cheers for any and all suggestions. I am very grateful. <3

i know trackball , but i cant say if that is for you. then you might also want to contact the , disability help central or what its call in your contry, to see if they know better

but it look like you want point and click games. plenty of them, you might even look at turnbase games, where fast action is not the point,

xcom , problem with all those games do they work on screen or do you need a better unit that controll mouse issue , just like a trackball , you could say a revesed mouse where ball on mouse role, because if you can use that , then there is alot of games that open up for you.

dont discard old games like amiga , Deuteros was one of the best game from that consol
and it can be emulated on a pc. ( winaue )

but you already figure out , games was not been made for people where normal opperation of device is a issue.

also dont forget other facebook games or games like transtation, sure there are tiny click fast things but just skip them and have fun with rest of games.
you might also want to look at settlers online, just another example of turnbase

and see now we are back at older games like battleisle or other strategic games
turnbase, and you will not find them on steam.

well know you have idea of diffrent games like turnbase and point and click games.

even railroad tycoon, more a manager game, i just hope you can find a diffrent mouse type you can use, that will be open alot of games for you. and pause and slow speed will help you alot in the game, dont forget old board games like chess or something like that they are also on pc.

im not a expert in touchscreen but if they can emulate mouse actions , that is the issue here
most mouse games use 2-3 button options and if screen can that then i think more games is possible to work.

There's some very nice little point and click games made by the publishers of those games so it's worth checking out the developer home pages:-

https://store.steampowered.com/developer/daedalic (publishers of Silence)
This is supposed to be good and on sale at 75% for another 4 hours)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/234270/Ken_Folletts_The_Pillars_of_the_Earth

https://store.steampowered.com/developer/AmanitaDesign (Publishers of Pilgrims and Botanicula)

My personal pick for point and click titles is WadjetEye games and as some of these games appear on iOS and Android, I'm sure they also have touch suport
https://store.steampowered.com/developer/WadjetEyeGames/

There's some nice puzzle games available on the platform like the Zup! series
https://store.steampowered.com/app/533300/Zup/

I definitely agree Steam could do a lot better in terms of accessibility in this respect.

also dl milinium return to earth ( its a remake free )they have removed the fighter with mouse so that is also a turnbase , and maybe look at people profile for games you might want to look at see google video and see gameplay. but you are right maybe look for steam group, with disability user that know more game names. or make one , that will help other with diffrent game type that better match your needs.

Sadly tons of games still don't support color-blind mode even it's something rather common, game industry isn't pay many attentions into such things

But anyway, I do believe you can just aim for 'Turn-based,' 'Story Telling,' 'Casual,' 'Adventure,' 'Creative mode' and specially games those you can pause, and better have slower pace(like management&simulation games/visual novels), if you are unsure, you can try to ask if the games OK for you within it's Steam Community discussions(if it's popular or newer game you might get some good answers, if not, maybe Reddit or your local game forums&the company's social medias are better place to ask)

If you aim for 'Touchscreen' you can actually found many things suits to these stuffs actually(nature of the touch play?)

Here's some related curator:
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/6857883-Touch-friendly-games/
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/25307930-Surface-Touch-Curator/
(Surface is a Windows Operating System tablet that have pen also, but the curator is kinda informative)

Here's 'Touch-Friendly' tag on the Steam store:
https://store.steampowered.com/search/?tags=25085

And here's the only direct related curator I found that talked about the accessibility that still seems active:
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/34384791-For-Better-Accessibility/
(I think the problem is there are many types of the inaccessibility and it's kinda hard to focus though)

And yeah, many Facebook games like Iceira mentioned are touchscreen friendly and more casual actually

While I understand people have issues with things like this,
& require these Features...

I think it's best to just include them as an Option, but
never be Required, due to the fact that while it helps
some people, it may be a burden to other people to have these
Features available...

Welcome To STEAM, =D

I don't play Point & Click Games where you go & solve mysteries
by finding things in various Photos & don't like them, but depending
on the Games, I may or may not play a Point & Click Game...

But I recently stumbled on a Goosebumps Point & Click Game,
however it does have Motion involved, & I don't know if thats too fast
or if it's slow enough to play... It's a low budget Game that looks
& feels like something from a long time ago... Not very modern at all...

It does have nice Colors & thick black outlined areas...

Heroes Of Might & Magic is an RPG based on Point & Click,
but i'm guessing that would be a bit more out of your View...

Are there any specifics you might be interested in?
Have you looked at any possibly like Card Games,
such as Poker at all?

GuRu Asaki,

Making accessibility "optional" because it may be a "burden" to able-bodied people is extremely ableist and indicative of how far we still need to come as a society. It sounds to me a lot like when people get irritated when it takes me a long time to get on the bus. In moments like that people sometimes complain because they see me as a "burden" on them. The word '"burden" is such a horrendous word and it has been used to describe disabled people forever. A "burden" because we cost the tax payer more money in medical fees. A "burden" because our wheelchairs take up to much room and block your way when you're in a rush. This word is a terrible word and you should never use it. Please rethink your bias and read up on accesibility. Educate yourself.

Everywhere and everything should be accessible to ALL. Just like when we fight for equality of gender or sexuality. The goal is not an "almost equal" society. The goal is an EQUAL society for ALL.Disabled people should have access to EVERYTHING others have access to. If you don't understand that then you are the enemy of our emancipation.

Thank you for your recommendations. I will investigate them further. I appreciate it. Just not your ableist viewpoint.

Hi Maureen. I know that the game BEYOND GRAVITY literally only requires you to press the space bar and it's not too bad of a game at all.

I like 'Leaves', for example, because it is like a jigsaw puzzle and I love jigsaw puzzles IRL. But the puzzles in the game are much more complex. However, I have trouble with the puzzles with too many numbers and with complicated (for me) levers to pull and push in a certain order. I just bought 'Glass Masquerade' because it is also like a slightly more original jigsaw puzzle game.

I also really liked 'Pilgrims' because all the game play is based on cards that you throw into a scene and every card does something, even if it fails. So no matter what I do, it's somehow funny and interesting. There is no failure really. I like the mix of the unique aesthetic of the design and the visuals, the humour, the sound design, and the simplicity of the actions. I finished the game very quickly though and then it was over! I wish they would make several levels for games like that.

Thank you again everyone. x

I too like jigsaw puzzles and have always been a fan of the Pixel Puzzle series here on Steam. Plus, they are free to play and you can buy additional puzzles if you like it...

BEYOND GRAVITY is very fun! I just bought it.

I like it for passing the time instead of playing solitaire. Thanks for the recommendation MoonCAT. <3
