"steam must be running to play this game"
so yeah, been getting this message recently when trying to play certain games. no clue why exactly it keeps popping up. i'm 100% sure i DO have steam running, since i'm launching through the client

any idea what's going on?

it's happened on several, and i don't know if i should go through and check which games and what are affected

Exit Steam, right click and run as administrator. Try that and see if it persists.

Launch Steam via your desktop where you can run it as an administrator.

Old library been known causing this error. It's time to switch to modern version.

These are my options to give.

1st option: Exit Steam. Rename your Steam.exe to something else in installation folder, then rename Steam.exe.old as Steam.exe

2nd option would be to run Steamsetup file and choose "repair" option on it. Does not reset your settings.

3rd option
WIN + R -> steam://flushconfig -> enter
NOTE: This will reset ALL your settings on Steam.
