PLEASE. END. PRE-ALLOCATION.
For the love of God, please ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stop pre-allocating downloads less than 10 gb. I am so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tired of waiting 30-40 mins for a 350 mb download to finish. Your pre-allocation is meaningless and serves no purpose other than to run up my drive's usage.
Sitting down with a cup of coffee I was really wanting to play some Warhammer 2. Too bad they released a 350 mb update on your ♥♥♥♥♥♥, pre-allocation servers so I have to wait an hour just to play my game. THANKS STEAM!

Then maybe you should fix your system. Nowhere it takes that long on my ten year old PC, not even with bigger downloads. And i'm talking GTA V big.

Pre-allocation is entirely done on YOUR computer, it has nothing to do with "servers".
You should maybe read up what pre-allocation actually is and does before you complain about it taking so long.

Do you not know what pre-allocation is? I don't have trouble with big downloads, just these small updates. So yes, that would very much be on the servers' end, not mine.

Actually i do. You evidently don't.
Pre-allocating is reserving disk space before the download is done to make sure that changes in the free disk space after the download started won't impact the download.

So, what part of that involves servers? Only the part that tells the client how much space to allocate. Which is just a few byte of information and transmitted almost instantly. When the allocating starts, the servers already have done all work.
After that it entirely depends on your computer, especially your SSD or HDD.

So, how are the servers at fault for something where servers aren't even involved anymore?

If it were transmitted instantly then me and other people wouldn't be having this problem you absolute genius. Think about that...

Again, the information on how much space to allocate is already transmitted when your PC starts allocating.
The process of allocating space is completely local. No server involved. Just your SSD/HDD, and your CPU.
No servers.

I wonder when you will understand such a simple thing.

Sounds like you need a better drive. I do agree the way the architecture is managed on Steam is not great but it shouldn't take that long - even a cheap SSD should a substantially sized update take no more than a minute or two.

It doesn't normally. Only with these small updates. I downloaded GTA 5 no problem just last week. No hiccups in the pre-allocation.

Computers are never simple.

These small updates are actually a part-illusion - a game may require a 300mb update for instance but 3gb of the architecture may need to be re-written or analysed which is why it takes longer.

Damn lol,... that actually makes a lot of sense. I never really thought of it like that, but for a game as big and asset heavy as Warhammer 2 that probably is what's happening. Thank you for your input here.

please enter full performance no matter if you have desktop pc or laptop, run in balance mode will reduce harddisk throughput, and if the pc doing other things sametime as double task on disk then you have a bottlelneck issue.

not all pc has usb3.0 and sata 6 disk, and seen slow harddisk in laptop only make it worse.
and stop think all SSD disk is fast , some are actual slower then others SSD

and NO pre allocation will never be removed, steam will not be responsible for fill systam disk up so it crash. ( so you can forget it ) ( sure user own fault ) this is windows issue. not sure if this has been fixed by windows )
