Ok to disable "Fan Always On" option in BIOS?
Hi

I have an hp envy laptop.

The fan runs constantly (has been for the past year)

I have tried everything to get the fan working normally but it still runs all the time.

Is it ok to disable the "Fan Always On" option in BIOS?

We don't know the box or the situation, but if the BIOS has a "Fan always on" option that's ticked, it's likely to be what you're looking for...

Check wether there is an option to set it to automated so your fans automatically turns on when the temperature gets too high.

If there isn't, I'd suggest you to not change this setting.

Personally, I always have my fans on to be on the safe side.

Fan? Is it over the heatsync as thats cooling your cpu.
If the cpu fan is always spinning sounds pretty normal for a Laptop as older styles even newish get hot more than than desktop PC.
Check if the vents have dust could cause airflow issues fans stay on.
Never turn them off any fans in a laptop have them checked instead.
Weigh up your choices for costs if the cpu over heats costs to repair verses a laptop check up.

could also be user own fault, run high demending things and use low/balance mode, then pc use more time on it and cause more heat ( even in full performance , you could still run very high demanding things and laptop could be a old model ) new laptop dont make much fan noise if they have the requirement to run those app.

Necro, but to clarify, if someone else googles this for an answer.

"The Fan always on just means that the fan is running constantly but it does not mean it's running at 100%. The speed is determined by the temperature.
It is just more pleasant for most people if the fan is running slowly in the background instead of starting (at a higher speed) and stopping all the time." source [h30434.www3.hp.com]

From safety point of view the only significant difference is, that when it is enabled, it does perform fan speed test on boot, and as far as I know, this applies to all HP laptops.

The fan seems to kick in at about 60% of allowed max temperature, so when I browse or play low requirement games, it's usually idle. Actually, it probably makes the fan last longer, as it's working only, when it's really needed, without any overheating damage to other components. However, my fan being already a bit used up, and actually louder at lower speeds, is the main reason for me to disable this option - otherwise I would not bother.
