Steam Disc Usage Lower Than Download Speed
I'm installing a Public Beta for Dead By Daylight and the download finished @ 25MB/s with 1.5GB being the total download size. I'm now waiting for the disk usage to catch up. I'm nearing max capacity on my HDD. It's a 3TB with 188GB remaining. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it but I also had this issue earlier when Steam was downloading an update for PUBG. I don't play PUBG but I still saw the issue and tried to fix it so it didn't happen to anything else.

Attempts to Fix:
- High Priority
- Restarting Steam
- Closing all other applications

Things to note:
- OS & Steam are ran on and SSD.
- Windows 10
- Task Manager says Steam is using 50% of the disks @ 50MB/s; however, Steam will still push the disk well over 200MB/s on occasion.
- This download occurred 10 minutes after starting my PC.

General Specs:
- GTX 1070
- 32GB RAM
- 256GB SSD
- 3TB HDD
- i7-7700K @ 4.20GHz

The install finished 15 minutes after the download. I'll try the solutions on future downloads and post updates.

this is the problem, you need a harddisk specilist to tell you this.
with lesser free space it takes drev longer time to even get to free space area, ( some call this collidation of disk space issue, there are app that move files to area so tiny area one disk )
this dont matter at SSD but at slave drev. ( common knowledge for experience user, was even a bigger issue before SSD, many actual run apps like disk deframenting app. ) most still know this but dont use it anymore, ( this is not about perles ona string, but more a get ride of free space among all data at disk ) just so you know then disk has under 10% free space, you will notice longer write issue. ( many disagree with 10% , but general unofficial rule is then you hit 50% of drev free space you start to suffer in write performance, and it only get worse the lesser freee space on drev, this can all agree on. this is old school know how. and many still learn this in our IT-education. )

pc.
10% rule was MS that popup with warning disk almost full ( 3tb is still 300gb, drev got bigger and % has fail. ( then on 5% you do notice this. )

and you need to understand disk RPM. and fewer sector at inner side then outer edge of disk read mush faster in outer.. ( many dont know this, until they read this somewhere. )

When download is finished the new files might be written into existing files. So those have to be copied, written too.
A download can cause 3 writes.

I'll be purchasing a 5TB HDD and replacing the 256SSD with a 1TB SSD soon before college. Thanks for the information!

This is also helpful as new game downloads typically don't take that long; however, updates will take a considerable amount of time.

Just add the 1tb

i actual never found a disk defragmenting app that was the best.

ps.
you might say you want dead data at inner sectors ( movie, music and data lesser frequent access,

and same time at outer side the games you play always and mid range most standard games.

this is just a example to see the point in right sorting ( and swapfile should be first at fastest area ) and Frequent access files,
( now you understand most slave disk and take advantage of this. )

there most be a disk defrag that take use this setup ( i mean this is nothing new, its basic education then you know it )

could also be saying to many no good disk defragmenting apps so the real good ones cant be found

and it dont help then SSD was made ( not SSD faulth ) but then all was tought dont defrag disk , and now all think it was both disk media types. )

you need to google this and start from scrates what best disk defrager, and watchout for apps that keep defrag SSD , ( that should max be done ½ or 1 year files clean up )
more a junk delete then a fragmenting issue.
and its here, you ask yourself why have MS slept in the hour and do you need prefetch and superfetch and , stop resize swapfile on a SSD ( better lock it so it dont resize if needed )

and do check app that keep write to SSD ( this is not healthy )
just becaue i know alot about it, im not a harddisk specilist, never work as such. you almost need to contact them for tech support. because i think MS and apps have no clue or care if they keep write to a SSD. ( this is a debat you need to understand and want a SSD disk to live longer. ) ( with 24hour pc on , im lucky is SSD even get past 2-3 years ) *3 ( apox normal user that only have pc 8 hour, and now you do see a valid point in try have disk live longer.

this is the back side of SSD ( same can be said with none SSD ) but SSD is still expensive.

you might even say temp files dont belong on a SSD disk ( and sould be kept in memory )

I use a programm that could defrag based on usage of files.
But i just use fast defrag.
I dont see benefit of the sorting on disk position. If you have a 7200rpm hdd.

For ssd, browsers should be kept in memory. And other things to reduce writes. I think windows 10 "optimization" does the trim, not actual defragmentation as it would do with hdd. But i dont know why it should run the trim as its supposed to do it meanwhile anyway.

The ssd that houses your operation system should have plenty free space (use overprovisioning too).
