Help :O - Your Steam verification code is "xxxxx" Sms
Hey guys!

I haven't used steam for ages but its still installed on my computer.
Also I haven't been logged in for at least a month.

So tonight I get three messages which are:
Your Steam verification code is "xxxxx" Sms
Your Steam verification code is "xxxxx" Sms
Your Steam verification code is "xxxxx" Sms

Alright so I log in and check the login history, again empty just me logged in a month ago and me logged in today.

So I am a bit afraid that my computer was compromised but then someone would have needed to log in.
In which cases I would get this SMS without log in?

Thank you!

The computer doesn't have to be compromised, your account credentials certainly were and SteamGuard saved it.
Change your passwords from a safe device, scan your PC for malware.

Hey! Cathulhu

Thank you for the answer, but if someone would have my credentials. I would get first an Email not a SMS?

Depends on how your SteamGuard is set up. It only uses one method. Steam Mobile Authenticator > then SMS > then email. You don't receive emails if you set it up to get SMS instead.
Same with the SMA, you don't get SMS or email notifications if SMA is set up.

Well, email isn't exactly secure for various reasons. If not password reuse, then malware. Your account is being attempted to hijack and SMS verification saves it.

Yes, but that would mean that in the first place I would get and Email. Which I never received. So maybe no one tried to login.

If no one tried to login, you wouldn't get a SteamGuard code sent to you.
Are you sure it's for the right account and not another account using that particular cell phone number?

Yes pretty much never had another one.
The issue is the following: Steam Guard was always set for Email.
If I login from a place steam doesn't know I get an Email.
I didn't receive an Email.
Also no one was logged into the Account as the logs say.

So the question is in which cases do you get this SMS ?

Thank you!!

When someone's trying to add your phone# to their account or "recover" your account.

Thank you ReBoot!

So it seems someone tried to recover my account by typing my Name. Without knowing the password for the account.
So maybe I wasnt hacked and it simply "happened" ?

Would be interesting to know from where he knew the name..

May be the case, yes.
Can anyone please tell us how to set up authentication by text message instead of email? I cannot find this info anywhere! Thank you :)

Not possible. There's the email or authenticator app, no SMS.
Thanks for the reply, ReBoot. I did the authenticator app. Anything is better than email lol.
