Return the balance to how it was before the chargeback or your account will be restricted forever. Use any card and add the funds back, bottom line is you need the money back in the account. NEVER CHARGEBACK.

help.steampowered.com can also maybe help you through the process.

Typically, steam needs you to reverse the charge back on the same card.

There must be some instruction along with the dispute. Follow it.

So instead of just getting you to give her money to cover it, she ruined your account's ability to use that payment method.

.... Look most times I side with the owner of the card? But this time, wow that was unnecessary on her part.

^This.

I believe the time frame was 90 days to resolve the dispute, before account becomes locked.

You can't expect her to know how Steam works.

What if she thought she was letting her child buy a game but instead he charges $500 to her card.
so you refund it like a normal person. chargebacks are only meant to be used for fraud.

It actually *IS* fraud if the child was given permission to buy 1 game with mom's credit card.. and then the child charges $500 in Steam gift cards, or games.

The child *has* committed fraud in that case and used the parent's card without authorisation.

In this case the mother is completely legally covered. HOWever. It would be *nice* if a mother (knowing it was her child who used the card) sought a different avenue to fix the problem than a charge back. However a chargeback in this case is completely legit.

The child *stole* money. It's like if i told my friend "You can take my old tv, i don't want it anymore" and they come to my house and take my old tv, my couch, my bedroom set, etc. Ya. i KNOW it was my "friend" who took the stuff, but they *stole* it because they took more than what was permitted, and i would 100% be within my rights to call the police about that.

The mother may not have known what Steam's refund policy was.. and frankly i do not buy that the child/OP "accidentally" spent more than the mother said. If it was "accidentally" a few more (like mother said "You pay spend $30" and the child spent $35.. i don't think this would have happened, assuming the mother is reasonable.

So lets just ask the OP.

How much money did your mother say you could use on her card? Did she say you may buy 1 game? Or use a specific amount of money?

How much more money did you "accidentally" spend?

Did you tell your mother, right away.. "Yikes! Hey mom, i know you said i could spend $50 on Steam, but somehow i accidentally spent $500! i'm sorry, how do we fix this?"

Or did you "accidentally" over spend... not tell your mother.... let her find out when her credit card bill came in... and she panicked, thinking her card got stolen when you used it on Steam.. she assumed some stranger must have spent all that money... because surely her sweet child wouldn't spend more than she gave the child permission for! She didn't suspect her own child would do such a thing.

In this case it's not really fraud and at most would be a civil issue if the mom wanted to sue her own son. It has nothing to do with steam and no fraud on steam's part so issuing the chargeback was wrong.

The mother is NOT legally covered, hence why the account is locked and will be permanently locked unless the money is returned. There is a legal way to refund the money and an illegal way which she did. Steam was not at fault here so issuing the chargeback, hitting valve with a chargeback fee, etc violated the rules.

Again it had nothing at all to do with steam however, so you aren't allowed to call the police on someone else who wasn't involved in that.

Again doesn't matter, ignorance of the laws isn't an excuse to break them. I mean a basic google search shows you the policy and how to do so.

first of all say sorry to mom, reason is no matter if you did it on purpose or mistake.
you need to earn back that lost trust, go buy mom a flower, dont care if you only can afford 1. or plant. ( this is not about the flower , but a gesture you do mean it.

you made mistake but sametime i can say she made a mistake and think you could controll yourself. ( same as put candy infront of kid, most cant stop not taken it )

this is know as human behavier, this is not as black and white, or yes and no, and whos faulth this is.

only adult's that has read this or learn it. can see both is to be blaimed.

Don't have kids, but if and when I do, the only thing they'll get access to is a prepaid credit card. Solves so much problems in advance...
