never had an issue with it
Just make a shortcut in the game's directory keep the game name but add more to the name.exe while it is in the directory then cut and paste to desktop.
Sorry but that is complete nonsense.
If you add a exe of a game as a non Steam link to your library you can name it anything you want.
Has nothing to do with the path recognition, its completely independent.
You can name the game whatever you want in your library, the target path will always be the added exe.
Even if i call the game total nonsense.
See:

I know how to do it. The issue is that the shortcut DELETES itself if I change it. This is the first time this has happened.
Thats the fault of the new library UI. If you rename a non Steam game it auto deletes itself from the category you put it in. But it should still be visible in your library list under "Uncategorized".
Restarting Steam can also help. Its a bit annoying.
Nope. It disappears completely and I have to re-add it. Restarting Steam did not help.
Which game are you trying to add if i may ask?
The community edition of Soldier of Fortune.
For some reason, changing the name of the directory allowed me to changed the name of the shortcut without any issues.
