You can look in your licenses and purchases when you bought/activated it. First time playing again, no, that not.

If it has achievements can look at date of first achievement. That would give you a rough idea of when you first played it (at least for any significant period of time)

On the game page in your library, go to "assistance" and you will see the buying date, even for a free game

A bit late to this but better late than never.
Press the support button, next to workshop

Yeah late to this as well, but Crazy Tiger's response is not necessarily true. With Valve games, you can hover over your name on Steam, click Activity, find any Valve game, click Personal Game Data, click Personal Game Data again, and it should show. I honestly have no idea why you can't look with non-Valve games.

And you think that 50 step process is easer that just hitting account at the top of the screen and checking your licences?

Found it recently. One of those 'steam achievements tracker' websites, but actually gives you so much detail about the game. You can even sort on Date Started. It's completionist.me.

checking your licenses only shows games that were paid for

This is incorrect. "View licenses and product key activations", which is accessible at the account level, shows all games including ones your received for free. Your purchase history will only show games you paid for, as far as I know - that is not the same page.

Yeah, obviously: the purchase history covers purchases on the Steam store and the Steam community market.

Free games are not purchased, and while keys are purchased, they aren't purchased on the Steam store, so neither kind of axtivation will be shown in the purchase history.

Now, technically, you don't need a license to play a free game -- but it would seem that Steam just can't handle cases where you'd play a game without having a license in your account. Thus, they give you a "Complimentary" license with a "Remove" link next to it. But, even if you remove it, if you play it again they'll just put it back :-)

this is a dumb way of doing it if you have had the game for awhile and they do consistent updates. you will have to hit the show more content button so many times and then sift through all the updates and try to find your first played. and then half the time it doesn't show up anyway
