Game folders flooding Windows My Documents folder

I can't find my personal documents because of every game saving an extra folder under My Documents.
Is there a way to change the path for the game folders to be saved?

It's quite common for games to save there and has been for years. It's coded into the game so nothing you can do about it.

If you don't like it create a new folder and call it "Documents v2" or something and then pin it to quick access. Put all your non game documents in the new folder. It'll be easily accessible.

Np's that's what I've been doing for years now. I wish all games would at least use the \Documents\My Games folder in to keep them all in one place

Mine are
B:\Documents\

Same with Music,Videos and pictures. I just changed the location to be my B drive. Easier for me to keep them backed up when using another drive.

One thing you can do in Windows File Explorer is navigate to the Documents folder, select the View tab from the top, then highlight the folders you don't want to see, and click "Hide selected items" in the toolbar. They are still in that directory, but they no longer appear to you in the File Explorer window. If you need to access those folders for any reason, you can check to show the "Hidden items" in the View tab in the toolbar.

Great question, incredibly stupid answer. It isn't best practice, it's definetely NOT recommended by Microsoft, there are locations provided for this purpose that are apparently unknown to devs (Documents\My Games\{game} - used by at least 20 games I have), and %APPDATA% that is not interfering with Documents.

The purpose of the Documents folder is to keep my Documents organized. Not my game files.

This is incredibly annoying once you have more than one laptop or desktop and OneDrive starts syncing useless game files to your work laptop. That's on Microsoft, but it wouldn't be an issue if games didn't put all their crap in it.

When did I say best practice? I didn't, you're the only one that has said 'best'. I said it's quite common for game saves to be in the Documents folder. That is NOT me saying it's the BEST way to do it. If they all went into Documents/Games/GAMENAME/ or any other Specific location that is used by EVERY Dev

it would be the best implementation because

1. They'd be organised into a single Games folder.
2. Gamesaves wouldn't be saved in various other places outside Documents or anywhere else

Unfortunately Devs don't have a Consensus of where they should save games. Thus the option I suggested is just an OPTION to help with a BAD situation to help OP try organise because Devs can't agree where to put their save game files. If I could force Devs to come to an agreement and make changes retroactively to every single game I would, but I can't.

In regards to Onedrive, if they all went into the same folder inside Documents like I just suggested you could exclude that specific folder and not backup you gamesaves. You could still do it now but you'd need to do that for each game

Anyone have any new insights into this, maybe a program out there someone's heard of that forces games to save in a specific folder other than the My Document Folder? It's become an extremely frustrating nightmare. I recently bought a copy of Fallout 4 on Gog solely so I can play Fallout 4 London, without having to delete all of my modded Fallout 4 Steam data from the My documents Folder, which is the required method for installing Fallout 4 London, you have to do a total wipe of the previous game and all its data in the documents folder. I had hoped that buying a second copy of the game, from a completely different company, would allow me to keep my Steam version with years and years of play on it, safe and separate, but nope...the Gog version went ahead and just merged all the save files in the same folder, all the ini files, base files, baked files, and everything in the F4SE folder are all just merged, overwritten , and duplicated into a digital mush. My Steam version saves don't work anymore because they're now missing dependent files that were in the F4SE folder, from mods I'm guessing. in the same files overwriting each other. Now neither game is playable. Forcing everything into the same folder and not giving an option to save in separate folders, is the most frustrating thing. They should just save the save game information in the game install folder to begin with. If the game is uninstalled, the save files can just be left behind in a mostly empty game folder, just like the mod folders get left behind.

I ran into this recently with Arma Reforger. I unchecked the sync with Documents and it created another Documents folder but it is “stored locally”. I moved the files over to the stored locally Documents folder and everything is loading fine and not clogging up my one drive. The problem tho is I have a smaller c drive for windows and a large d drive for my games and stuff. While Arma Reforger is on my d drive all the mods go to my Documents folder. I understand the thought of having your games save files there so you can play from any pc with one drive but all the mods? Can’t believe we are still doing this.
