Steam overlay and Windows XP
Does overlay work on Windows XP? One person claims that everything works for him. Personally, I have nothing. I put all the necessary checkmarks in the steam settings and the games themselves. The keyboard shortcut does not help either. And so... Are there any guys who dare to try to help me?

I agree that "can't" seems extreme without a valid explanation.
I love how other people feel that their definition must be the only one people use, and then refuse to accept when other people have their own definition themselves.

It's not up to you to decide for someone what they can and cannot afford.

If it was me? I could not afford that 55$ piece of equipment or a program costing the same. Why?

I don't have a job. I have to rely on other people for my life. I have good friends, I have friends with great jobs. My entire computer setup for the last decade is *cast off other people's stuff*, which I want you all to remember may or may not be available to literally anyone else.

Stop judging. Start being a touch more accepting that some folks CANNOT or indeed WILL NOT change their OS just because you believe they should. That kind of elitist crap is really really tiresome.
At least there was a good hint in it.

You can get reasonable units for less money than you expect.
Also, depending on energy costs, the right choice of "modern" things can lower the bills significantly.

And yet somehow people who are running literally 15 year old hardware are expecting steam and every other os vendor to support XP in perpetuity?

This isnt a "buy a new computer ever 2 years thing"

Also lets say you have a 10 year old computer. Ok so what is the most trash cpu you could have gotten from intel at that time. Its an i3-530 literally the first i3 ever released

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kndyk0vsTno

And again it runs windows 10. Its not great but again its a 10 year old cpu. But you can install windows 10 and make it run.

https://www.quora.com/Can-an-Intel-Pentium-Dual-Core-support-Windows-10-64-bit-efficiently

You can even get windows 10 to run on a Core2Duo from 2007. Aka windows 10 runs on devices that came out when the first iphone was released and when people had Macs that were still running PowerPC!

So functionally any hardware that's basically 12-13 years old, still can run windows 10.

Buuut theeey sellll ooooolld gamez!!!1! /s
No, they don't necessarily think that.

Some people haven't got the memo that their 'fifteen year old computer' isn't SUPPOSED to be supported any more.

Maybe stop trying to tell people what they want to run, how they want to run it, and asserting that their old - and still functional - software isn't worth having any more. I assure you *it is still worth having* in a functional state.

The OP has an old computer and wanted to do something that cannot be done any longer on steam.

Why not just *say that* and shut up about how inferior their computer or OS is to you.

No it means you don’t want to. There’s a difference
Ahah
Nope

You really are kinda pushing it.

I own an XP laptop that is *PHYSICALLY INCAPABLE* of being upgraded.

I know I cannot be the only one who has such a device. I am thankfully able to use a w7 machine, completely apart from that old XP box. But a LOT of people *cannot actually afford* a new computer, *cannot upgrade their old one due to hardware issues* or cannot purchase a new OS.

Stop being so completely insulting for a moment. When someone states they CANNOT upgrade, it's because they already KNOW that there are other options.

OP: XP is not at all supported by Steam. So... If you have already tried updating Steam, it will not correctly run on that device any more, and you're kinda screwed even if you had games on it that ran before now. This was discussed to death over a year ago, this was not a new thing at all.

The only solution to running any steam games on an XP is to NOT HAVE UPDATED STEAM on it, before this support ended last year.
Thanks. You understood me. And that’s the point. I found a video on YouTube. There, one person showed how to run Steam on XP. An archive of the latest Steam version that worked on Windows XP was attached. Well, just needed to replace some files. Steam really started. I can run and download games. I can do anything. But only overlay does not work. Although this person, in turn, claims that this works for him.
Okay I see what this led to. The discussion is closed.
Thanks Zekiran for understanding.
Yeah as long as you do not go online, Steam as it existed *just before* they changed it, will work fine - but you can't be on multiplayer or have any online anything, which does include the chat overlay and whatever else. But at least it would mean you can run older games on an older machine, without them just... not working at all.
How old this system? Can you list your system specs? On top of steam client, click help, click system information, and copy, and paste the text in this discussion, if your unable to do that, use CPU-z, run it, to the bottom right click on validate, then click on submit, a browser page will appear, copy the link and paste the page link in this discussion.

I can say use Linux, or if able to use Windows 7, but how far back is your hardware is the question.

Yikes, yea Intel had a better year than AMD in 2008, but still yikes.

Also that really small amount of ram as well, your best option is Linux really with this system, if you wish to use steam for online, otherwise you're limited really bad with that system, so as long you don't update your current Steam, and keep it offline forever you be fine using it the way it is.

Yeah, Linux clearly is the best option. Way better than keep using XP.
