Thrustmaster T-GT wont work on Steam

Steam is making me insane. My wheel works perfect in my pc outside steam, but once I run steam the wheel goes numb. Even the centering force of ffb goes off and instantly returns when I close steam.

Wheel, rim, drivers all updated and reinstalled. Tried to delete all controller data from my user folders. Doesnt seem to be user settings problem as my sons account does exactly the same.

Steam recognizes the wheel as generic controller. I have only seen steam recognize it as Thrustmaster T-GT once right after one of the driver updates, but i didnt test if it worked - went to put in the button mappings which showed up as empty and bang it was back at generic controller right after the buttons were done. It seems theres no way of making steam forget the controller after it has once recognized it?!

This is a major issue as it prevents me from playing any racing games with my wheel in steam and thus wont be buying any.. Only have Wreckfest and beamng now.. neither work with the wheel and forza outside of steam is fine..
