Is it possible to access Steam in China?
I heard many Western sites are blocked in China (like Facebook, YouTube and Google), so I am wondering if Steam is currently being blocked or inaccessible in China because I am going to travel to China next month from Canada. I hope I am able to access Steam in China because I am going to play it safe and NOT use a VPN to access sites that are blocked in China since it VPNs are blocked in China, and it is illegal to use VPNs to access censored content in China (VPNs, by themselves, are not illegal in China though as long as you aren't accessing censored content there).

So my question is simple...is it possible to access Steam and play Steam games in China? If it is, then I'll bring my laptop to China to play some Steam games. If it is not possible, then I'll keep my laptop at home, and not bring it to China since it would be useless to bring my laptop to China if I can't play /access Steam in China.

I hope my question makes sense.

Valve is currently working on a Chinese client. Chinese government blocked the Steam community back in Dec 2017. Using a VPN is the only way right now.

You can play your games just fine. The only thing blocked is access to the community.

So that means you cannot chat with anyone on Steam or cannot post on the forums on Steam in China?

I believe it is only the forums.

How do you know this info?

I was here when Valve added the Chinese sub-forum just days before they blocked the community. The sub-forum was removed right after.

Relax, you can use a VPN all you want in China. No one is going to magically show up at your door and give you a ticket for using a VPN. They literally won't know what you are doing with it, that's how they work. China's anti-VPN technology in the GFW is all automated.
e.g. OpenVPN protocol doesn't work.
So what are you saying? Do VPNs work in China or not? If VPNs are blocked in China, then I guess there is no point brining my laptop to China since I wouldn't be able to play Steam games there. And if VPNs are not ubiquitously blocked in China, which VPNs/ what kind of VPNs are useable in China?

As a Chinese, in the first instance, WE CAN PLAY GAMES IN CHINA IN STEAM(GLOBAL) VERSION!!! If you wanna to go China, Welcome to China!
You can absolutely bring your laptop to China. However, you may find some internet problems like Error code:-110 and so on, you don't have to worry about it and just restart the steam. Cause in China, Youtube, Google, Facebook actually be banned. If you find that this problem appears frequenly, you may need a VPN or Proxy. But I don't recommend it. Remember that don't use proxy until you finally can't stand this condition cause you may find you cannot visit steam anymore unless you turn the proxy on.
That's all.
Oh, one more things is that NEVER! EVER! change the steam store of your account to China! Just keep the orginal store. Steam China is comming! If you change the store to China, you cannot change it back to your mothercountry or any other resions except China anymore. Users in China will be limitted and they can just use the Chinese store. You may wonder why Chinese Users like me hate steam china so much, that's because, for example, You bought the GTA V and you wanna to enjoy it happily yesterday, today you found that you can't play it anymore although it's still exist in your steam library!
If you have changed it, turn it back now! immediately!

Forgive my awful English cause I'm just a student. At last:
STEAM CHINA GET OUT OF CHINA!

How has the situation evolved since Oct 2019?
Does a game need to be on Steam China now to be played? Loads of people from China played McDROID back in April.
Are there benefits to beign on Steam China, how is that version viewed by Chinese players anyway?
