New friends UI has blurry fonts and pictures
For some reason for me both the font and the avatars/game icons in the new UI appear much blurrier and harder on the eyes than in the old one. Are they using a different font antialiasing method and different resampling method for pics than before? I could tolerate the other feature of the new UI, but this is what kills it for me.
An example of how it appears for me, the font is definitely more blurry and less crisp than before. an obvious example is how "i" and "l" in "Online" are now two pixels wide: https://i.gyazo.com/3ba8ae09aaf3749c72a393f206190e84.png

Upd: the DirectWrite checkbox in the steam ui options doesn't affect the friends UI window, but it affects the rest of the interface. Might be related.

Nope, no difference whatsoever

Hello, I had a similar issue, I was able to clear up the blurriness in my Library fonts (on Win7) by doing this:
Control Panel -> Performance Information and Tools -> Adjust visual effects -> Smooth edges of screen fonts (uncheck)
I had to restart Steam for the visual changes to take effect.

Unfortunately, while my Library font looks nice now, my Friends List went from blurry to jaggy:

(new UI is on the right, on the left is old UI to show how nice things used to look)
So I do not know if this will help you.

I did just confirm that re-checking this checkbox reverted back to the old blurriness (after restarting Steam), so if the change is bad for you, you should be able to undo it easily.

I'll be watching this thread, in case you find a solution that helps me too. Best of luck to you!

I know what you're saying, but it seems to be a different issue. First of all, you're using the old friends UI.
Did you try checking or unchecking the DirectWrite checkbox in the steam options?

The right part of the screenshot is my current UI, that's the new friends UI in compact mode. The left part of the screenshot is the old UI, just there to show that things used to work ok for me.

DirectWrite checkbox has no effect for me.

With the new UI I did just test and confirm that the Control Panel did change my UI from blurry to jaggy, give me a minute and I'll do a side by side of those to clarify.

Edit: here's a new screenshot with blurry left, jaggy right, and the setting included on top to show the source of the effects for me
