Steam Update Blues and a FIX! Thanks Killo Zapit!
Okay, so here's what you do on Windows:

To disable Big Picture running on startup (something Valve forced active with the update and I can confirm this because using a specific delete and reinstall technique from 2013 did NOT resolve the issue) ...

This won't work:

This will:
"Try creating a shortcut to steam.exe or running it form the command prompt and adding
-nobigpicture to the end of the command line. Not sure if that will work but I heard it does."

It will start the Steam client without Big Picture mode.

To do the shortcut thing, just simply add -nobigpicture at the end of the Target (make sure there's a space between the target address and the added line command).

Hey, VALVE! Your Big Picture feature is super broken; fix it before ya force everyone to use it on startup, what do ya say, eh!?

If you activate Big Picture Mode and close the client when it's running of course it's going to start up in that mode. You don't need to edit the shortcut just exit big picture mode. I don't ever use that mode but I launched and closed it to see if it worked and it does. To exit BP mode click on the circle icon with the vertical line in it at the top right of the screen. No need to edit the shortcut.

That's just it. I never use Big Picture mode. I most certainly did not use it last night either, the last time I had started up Steam and it worked fine. I mean, Steam updates regularly, so that's the only conclusion I can come up with.

If Valve were to explain themselves, say 'Oops, we goofed', I'd be fine with that.

They didn't goof. This didn't happen to anyone else so it's something you did. Maybe you fumbled on it to turn it on.
