Do I get tokens if I purchase/add funds to my Steam wallet or only when I use those funds?

I didn't even know that buying games with tokens was a thing. I've heard of loopholes I've read on Reddit, but didn't pay too much attention so that's probably what you're referring to?

The reason I'm asking is because I currently have 1,100+ or so tokens available, and want to purchase Mortal Kombat 11, which is currently priced at $35.99. If I purchase directly using a credit card that'll leave me with 4700 tokens, roughly (1,100+ I currently have + 3600 from the game). I want to take advantage of the $5 gift card/coupon thing that costs 5k tokens (since I'm not too far off), so instead of buying the game directly w/ my CC I'd rather add $40 to my Steam wallet and purchase the game, assuming I'd get 4k tokens with that purchase. 4k tokens +1.1k that I currently have, if this is how it works, will grant me the 5k I need to redeem that $5 gift card/coupon. Is this correct, or is that now how it works? I apologize in advance for sounding dumb.

Made a purchase with saved up wallet funds, and 24 hours later, never got any tokens...

Don't really understand how that can be abused, I mean it would have been money that I deposited prior to even knowing about the sale. Doesn't really inspire one to deposit or keep wallet funds, especially since most games can be found at better discounts elsewhere these days...

Wait, now I’m even more confused. Why would you not get tokens for spending funds you have on your Steam wallet during the sale? I thought that’s one of the main ways of earning tokens. For every $1 usd spent you get 100 tokens, no? And do you have to wait 24 hours for tokens to appear? I thought it was instantaneous upon purchasing. The only way I can see it being abused is if you acquired tokens whichever way, used those tokens to redeem the $5 coupon (or anything really), then later refunding the game yet still keeping the redeemed goods, unless they found a way for that not to be abusable.

I don’t think I’d be able to find Mk12 premium for cheaper than what it’s priced at currently on Steam, and if I can buy that + possibly earning/redeeming 5k tokens for $5 coupon then that’s kind of more incentive for me to purchase it through Steam. I’d buy it either way since I’ve been eyeing it since release and now it’s affordable for me. Just trying to figure out which way about purchasing I have to go with to earn these tokens. I believe there’s also 3 more days to earn several hundred tokens through quests, til the 31st, and earn one of the main Steam badges for the 2019 awards thing. So I might have exactly 5k tokens or be off by 100.

Darksu we dont buy games with tokens , we buy games to get Tokens and those Tokens acn only spent on teh Winter Sales Bling.
We can use those Tokens to buy the the Winter Sale Coupon for 5000 tokens to get a discount on a game.

How it was abused was bulk buying of cheap games.

You can still use your wallet to buy games but you wont get tokens.
From what I've seen using the wallet over Winter Sales is not working as it should.
I've bought 25 or so games using my Pay Pal with no problems.

Gotcha. I think I might’ve misread, cus I thought you wrote that buying games with tokens was a thing. I can see how mass buying cheap games in bulk can abuse the system though. I don’t care too much about the stickers/emotes, but I really only want my game, and the $5 coupon that’s redeemable w/ 5k tokens. Since you’ve clarified that using Steam funds added during the winter sale isn’t working as it should be then I will definitely just buy my game directly with a CC. Tysm for clearing that up!

Don't care about the tokens that much, would have been nice to get them still.

I only used money in Steam wallet funds and got no tokens. It's still real money that at some point, for whatever reason, I decided to put into Steam.

Honestly, it's not that I even care about the tokens, or the event, as Steam events are predictably lackluster anyways. But after I drain my wallet this time, I've got literally no incentive to refill it.

Yeah I feel the same way. I’m broke af, but if I can get a $5 coupon with the acquired tokens from purchasing a game + what I’ve earned during the quest then I have to take advantage of that!
