How to know if I'm blocked on steam?

I was blocked by a friend just a while ago and I knew I was blocked because they appeared offline on my friends list but when I go to their profile it said that they were online. Now they appear as "away" on my friends list, so am I still blocked or did they unblock me? Or was I never blocked in the first place?

If you are blocked, you won’t be able to comment on any of their visible artwork or screenshots.

Edit: To see public screenshots from private profiles, add /screenshots to the end of their profile URL. Add /images for artwork.

It could be him/her using invisible mode.
As mentioned in this post, it can have some problems.

To be sure, try to comment on the person's profile/screenshots/etc or send a message. If you are indeed blocked, nothing would happen.

I sent them a message and it appeared on the chat screen, so I'm not blocked?

I want to know if I was blocked in the first place though. At the beginning of the day they appeared offline, but upon checking their profile they appeared as online, so I assumed that I was blocked or something. However they now appear as "Away" on my friend's list all of a sudden.

My other friends were also able to see them as "Online" on their friend's list before they're status turned to "Away" instead of "Offline" for me

You might have been.
But we can't rule out the possibility that it is a bug with the invisible function as mentioned in my previous comment.

My advice is, ask the person.

When you block a person, you will not be able to send them any messages anymore.

When a person has you blocked, you can still send them messages. They will appear in your chat window. But they will never be seen by the person blocking you.
