They are nothing more than Steam's chromium browsers.
and snapjak i wanna remove them so i dont have extra ♥♥♥♥ running while im streaming/gaming?
So what happens if you have none open in the first place? I'm trying to fix a friends computer and it does it during bootup....your answer for it making more then 1 clearly isn't totally right since my steam works fine and never does that no matter how many pages are open. Yet on another machine it's creating 4-8 of them on a computer not accessing steam at all.
Steam runs off chromium. each instance of SteamWebHelper is the equivalent of a 'new tab' on a web browser.
If you can access the store without it running you have a magic PC.
For the web stuff, use a good browser like Firefox, Chrome, Opera with good protections, like AdBlock.
Or just let them be. There's nothing wrong with having them running.
Oh but my ram usage? Yea well get 16GB of RAM minimum and you wont have to worry.
Even on 8GB of RAM it is not even an issue.
Learn how to flush your RAM.
Even that doesn't "help". A fresh start already has a number of instances.
Just ignore them. Processes that don't do any work are not taking CPU time, and if the system runs low on memory, processes that don't do any work are prime candidates for getting moved out of RAM. So, however, you look at it, no harm done.
Its normal behaviour despite us not preferring or disliking it.
Once a month go into steam settings and delete download cache and also web browser cache.
