Epic games hijacks steam game shortcuts?
So i bought The Talos principle a while back on steam, and then later it was free on epic store, so i just took it. I installed it on epic store just because i wanted to enable cheats and go with noclip around the maps just for fun (it disables achievements so i didint want to do it on steam). And now when i run the game from desktop shortcut, the steam shortcut somehow changes into epic shortcut and open epic store. I tried deleting and adding shortcuts several times and it happens every time. How does this happen? Is this because of two copies of the same game being installed? I dont have any other matching games in steam and epic so i dont know if this would happen with other games...
So do i have to delete the epic games version for this to go to normal or just not use shortcuts?
And how can epic even do this kind of bs?

Check the shortcut. If it's still a steam:// URL, then Epic may indeed be hijacking shortcuts (providing a great reason for uninstalling).

Tested... It did. Uninstalled...

Manually repairing the protocol definition may be a viable solution as well. Although, if the EGS hijacks Steam, that's rather telling of Epic's morality. Or rather lack thereof making the EGS a liability.

When i run the shortcut the normal steam path "steam://rungameid/*****" becomes "com.epicgames.launcher://apps/Bustard?action=launch&silent=true". Idk how, but it does.

Tested without the Steam version installed. Uses Epic's own.

So, something is not right about this.

Wait, if you download from Steam, epic client hijacks the shortcut?

It doesn't like 2 shortcuts for the same game even if they are in different drives.

Install both. Make shortcut for Steam version and EG version. Shows rungame while hovering over it for Steam but EGlauncher in properties.

I wonder if that happens with other games too or if it's specific to this one.

I have to check it out. I'll post when I'm done.

I have no idea how this shortcut thing works. It changes the shortcuts (.url file) destination if you change the name into one of the games in epic library you have installed name. But if you change it into random after that, it changes back into what it was before. So like wtf, shortcuts have memory of what it was before? And when i changed one epic shortcut into random and other into it, it did not change. And when i changed other random shortcut into the name the previous one currently has, it changes into what the name says, but not what it the game name is... This makes my head hurt...

Just renamed steam shortcut and it works fine, but still kinda interested in how this sh actually works.

To put it simply, if you have the same game on epic and on steam, epic changes steam games shortcut into it's own (if they have the same name),
Simple workaround is to change steam shortcuts name a bit, so epic wont touch it.

Idk really if steam or epic apps use chromium.
