I find it's good to keep your info private in case some creep in a steam forum starts trying to get it.
Yes! Thank you!
i'm not a fan of this new BS at all.
I just cannot see why they "NEED" a phone number.
How bout valve Gettin hacked, now steam users gettin SWATTED by angry ingame enemies?
Why can't people just keep their info private you Big Brother? Why do I need to be identified. What does purchasing a digital video game even remotely have anything to do with tax evasion? Sorry I don't buy it. When I go to the store to make a purchase I dont fill out a form with all my personal info. It's anonymous, as it should be here as well. Why are you so adamant about badgering this individual who is concerned about his privacy? The game distributer already has your info to begin with, now needs it again??? For every single purchase made? ANd you're just prattling on with every response this guy gives like he should just shut up and accept it. Like you can't stand that he wants to be private.
I will be the one to explain the true evil of this issue. It simply is the fact internet is killing local stores.
True, the people who are attacking steam, don't understand this, nor does about everyone who open their mouth on this forum. So the point to shut up and pay your taxes is most valid to this post. Everyone knew it was coming. So having to pay taxes is no surprise. The real deal is the law is now making you conform it is you.
The tax laws where made from the past, and just not made for the internet. So they are behind the times. So now we have cities, towns, countries losing income. Bad. And before anyone says their place does not use Sales taxes, So therefor I don't know what I am talking about. Think about all that lost income from business licenses, income from people working the stores, hell the property taxes cause the renters can't find people to take the space. Thanks to the internet, we lost our local middle man. Both having good and bad effects.
Now on to what may happen. I can't be sure if everything I say happens exactly, however I feel it is a general outcome. First of all, property taxes/rent will grow at a greater rate then past years, if not already. This is the sign the local government is losing income. They know the issue, and will resort to what is currently in their power. Now state government could jump in, and takeover with subsidies, similar to how national government does with states (tho local is really just as shell safe for special places). Based on the level, It defines the next step on how much your local government has. But local government will demand a piece of your online shopping.
That leads to what local government will do. Well Just look at good old California. States will declare if you buy or sell something out of their state, you still have to pay sales tax. California is already doing it to out of state retail. Just look it up. And if you think the retailer is going to eat the cost, I laugh. But that opens more nickle and dimeing. Like all of Steams servers for California are in Nevada, Guess you have to pay Nevada state tax too, cause you did business in its borders. It will turn in to a cash grab. It being government, a very slow cash grab but one never-the-less. Unless you can claim with out a doubt, government are not greedy idiots? Also companies don't care if government gets greedy. They get to liquidate a middle man, and still charge about the same, and when the government comes in, they can charge more. So there goes Lobbyist.
That leads to why it is just bad they want to know where you live. As mentioned, Local government will tax you. But how is the question. Will they be happy to just take a cut from your sale. Or will they set property tax on your no transferable, nor liquidable property so as to make sure they have a constant revenue stream?? Honestly why not both? So now you have to pay 1% property tax on all your steam games every year. Horray. Nothing bad comes out of telling who you are. Oh by the way, due to video games are bad because they cause mental illness, the government is going to attempt to help you by taxing you like Cigarettes, so now you need to pay 2 dollars more on each game, and pay 20 cents per hour you play.
You mad, well "You don't have to give them any information. You can freely choose not to provide it. Nobody's forcing you to put your information in." You don't need to buy this luxury good. But if you you know anything about Luxury goods. Taxes on them only work for the poor. You will pay them. Oh also your city has banned 1st person shooters, so Steam now has to go thru the records and send your computer a kill code on all your 1st person shooters.
Putting your name next to digital products is just asking the government to find ways to tax you. Hell, how many "rebellions" where based off taxs? If you know anything about economics then go thru the USA revolutionary war history with the thought that it was all caused by the super regressive taxes on luxury goods. Gives for a good chuckle.
I could go on, and on. Even bring out scientific papers explaining thought processes. But Honestly. I sound like a crazy doomsday profit. I know that, cause lets face it. My time table is next 200 years. And even that is only based off big conjectures. For example, at this point every male under 50 has had played a single video game for more then 10 hours of their life. In 10 years it will be everyone under 60, and so on. To a point where everybody has. At that point, it will be hard to even think about vilify video games. But keep in mind that it happened to liquor and tobacco. I am sure that I am wrong on points, and know I sound crazy. But look back in a year, then 5 years, then 10 years, then 20, and so on. Look at the gaming environment then and compare it here.
Fact is with emerging technology government is moving in, and they want tax you on every little thing. Hell over the course of america, thanks to technology Taxes have already changed. Worst of all due to how computers work, they can tax you on everything. That is what scares me about giving too much info. Steam can claim they got rid of the info, but storage is dirt cheap right now.
Oh, about Steam taking away your games. I am sure you said no way that will ever happen. Well it already is. China payers just lost their games. Oh sure you say, that is just China being China. Me, I am just going to wait, and watch. I am a negative Nancy, but lets face it, Everyone uses WiFi, and if you know anything about WiFi you know, they know exactly where you are in the world when it happens. Unless somehow you are one of the .02% that use VPNs or hard wires. So requiring an address is bull. Under USA Law as based on the past, you only should get billed based off the tax rate in the state you are in. That is the standard and it is easy for Value to make a program to check, hell they all ready do that. But the way the law is doing it, the states are laying claim over your every action. You are their property, and they want to collect dividends. They are just working that collar around your neck before they tighten it.
Going to edit in this fact. Steam has hardware survey. You have a 500$-1000$ average computer parts cost for the big supporters of steam (PC master race). Government can roll in, make the Steam hardware survey mandatory, use Steam to confirm you have that hardware, and tax you on it. If you laugh at that statement, the only reason why governments don't tax you on the little things constantly, is because it was impossible to make money with the cost of inventorying that. But not today with computers and internet.
MONEY IS MONEY
