XBOX 360 DRIVERS CAUSING BLUE-SCREEN
Hi there - I'm really interested in playing fighting games for the PC. I loathe the thought of using the keyboard for this, and so plugged in a wired 360 controller and downloaded the official Microsoft Drivers. For the first time ever on my decade old PC, I've been receiving Blue Screens of Death.

This only happens with the controller plugged in - regardless of what USB it's in. I don't have the logs, but the message of the crash screen is along the lines of the Windows Driver Framework and a violation.

I know damn well it's the controller causing it, but I'm honestly not sure what to do beyond that. Any tips? :>

You might want to post the FULL error messages.

To to upload a dump file and post it here, so we can see everything.

As a start, re-install the driver.

Also, Windows does have an event log, including those crashes.

Hi guys, thanks for the help so far!

Uninstalling and reinstalling didn't work, unfortunately.

https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aq-tRQUcQ2r8gynjLZfHBOHYt3sQ A link to the dump file, if it helps!

Strangely, I notice that there's a complete lack of crashes if the xbox controller is sitting still on my lap. This might not mean anything. HOWEVER, the controller's faulty in that it disconnects with any movement of the wire. I wonder if the disconnecting/reconnecting has anything to do with the screens? Alternatively, it could be because I'm not playing Street Fighter 5. >.>

The suggestion was a good idea, but unfortunately my USB ports seem to be up to date already!

Again, thanks for the help, been really prompt and professional. :)

what version of Windows are you running?

Yeah, that would have been useful to give, sorry, LOL.

Operation system is Windows 7 64 bit professional

Other system specs:

GTX 970 Nvidia
Intel i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
32 GB RAM
Service Pack 1

I can't imagine the extra details help too much, but just in case. :)

I am currently not in a location I can examine the minidump file, but a few things come to mind..

is your bios up to date? if you look in device manager are any drivers missing or showing errors? what are you running for anti-virus? that is alot of RAM, 4 sticks I assume but are they all the same clock speed, have you tried running a RAM test? how long have you been running this Windows installation? you haven't attempted to Overclock the PC have you?

for the sake of it, open up command prompt and type in the following: "SFC /scannow".. I can think of one thing a few things that could likely fix it unless its hardware related, but both are a little drastic..

I will try to examine the dump file when my test bench frees up (working on server updates atm), but someone else may be able to take a look earlier.

I really appreciate the professional help you're giving, you're a star!

There's no chance of my bios being up to date - in fact, as of this second, I didn't think you COULD update the bios. I'm seeing a lot of articles advising against doing this, they have a sort of 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' sort of mentality. Would you still recommend a BIOS update?

The RAM sticks are all the same speed, I'm so very certain. I haven't run a RAM test. This PC was upgraded after having XP for a few years to Windows 7 and remains Window 7 to this day, so a LENGHTY amount of time, LOL. As for the RAM test, I'll do that soon!

Thankfully, I have very little understanding of what Overclocking is and have never went near purposefully trying to do it. :)

The scannow test has just finished and no integrity violations were found.

And no rush for looking at the dump file, appreciate what you're doing as it is!

Yes update your BIOS.. given what the BIOS does for your motherboard, I have seen out of date BIOS's cause more varried issues over the years than any other.. if you look at your PC manufactures website, they often have a utility that will detect the proper BIOS update (assuming the PC is a prebuilt)..

and wait, this PC had XP on it at one point? (looks at specs listed above) ... mind posting a DxDiag report? no reason to upload the Dxdiag report, a cut and paste will do in this situation..

I'm almost nervous about posting this, LOL! When I first got the PC from my dear Grandad as Christmas gift, it had 2 GB of RAM, an integrated Intel graphic's card, and Windows XP on a 32 bit system. I do CGI rendering, so over the years I've tried to build it into something that could... you know, actually do something beyond playing Minesweeper... With this said, keep in mind my tech knowledge is a LITTLE bit flimsy. I could fool the average joe into thinking I'm a whiz, but for someone like yourself... Yeah, I can't pull the wool over your eyes. :p

Also, that BIOS is saying 2011... Yeah, should MAYBE update that.

not quite what I was looking for.. if you see in the lower part of that Window you will see a "Save all Information" button? I wanted the contents of the file that generates..

and no need to worry, there really isn't anything there that could be used against you.. it basically just catalogues hardware, drives, things like that.. just gives us a bit more info to go off of (and if you ever enter a games closed beta or certain companies support, its the same information they will ask you to send them.. just some information on the way your PC's hardware is set up)

Ah, no problem!! I'll upload it to Dropbox, the contents are too long to post here. :)

Cheers, this is a lot of hassle for you, I really appreciate it!
Plug the controller in another usb slot first.
Winged One Dec 9, 2018 @ 2:37pm
are you plugging it into a slot on the case, or directly into the motherboard on the back?

have you made sure to install your motherboards latest chipset drivers?

Hi Muppet among Puppets, already tried that unfortunately. :(

I'm plugging it into a slot on the case - I'll try plugging it into the back. :) I ran an Intel diagnostic tool to see if there were any chipset drivers out of date, but that doesn't seem to be the case!

Is the controller 3rd party?
