dude i gifted my friend the game and he can't play it because it requires a cd key which he doesnt have.. nay help?
Make sure his uplay client is up to date.
the game is auto registered when the person launches the uplay client. Ensure the uplay client is up to date and logged in.
Steam doesn't generate keys for other people's products sold on the platform, so if you're not being allowed to play a game without a CD key and you haven't been given one yet, odds are steam sold more copies then the original developer has made keys available to steam again, and it'll take a few days for new ones to be created.
By the way, this is not a new issue, or even one restricted to specific developers. It tends to happen any time there's a relatively large sales event on steam, particularly when fairly popular games come up for sale at fairly cheap prices.
I've had to wait as long as two weeks for some games, before.
Uplay does not use cd keys anymore and also steam has stopped letting games use cd keys for external activation for awhile now
It’s all generated via Uplays api which auto registers the account. There is no cd key
Take it up with Ubisoft, then, because they seem pretty convinced otherwise. https://support.ubi.com/en-us/Faqs/000016034/How-Do-I-Register-A-New-Game-In-Uplay-PC
That's a FAQ for registering your game's CD key, by the way. Incidentally, you find the activate key icon in the ubisoft client right below the news icon. That's with the most current version of the Ubisoft client itself which was released, I'm gonna say... About 6 hours ago, as of right now.
That's even before you get into the fact that many games sold on both platforms do in fact still come up with CD key prompts on installation, including several Ubisoft titles more recent then 2015's last Rainbow 6 series installation.
That's clearly for CD keys on Uplay not digital purchases on steam. As stated multiples times in this thread, there is no way to view keys for Unisoft games on Steam because for over a year Unisoft has used an automatic activation system.
All the OP has to do is ensure he is running the latest version of Uplay before launching the game on Steam.
Again on steam there are no cd keys for uplay anymore. Steam uses a direct API call to Uplay to register the game to your Uplay account. As such you never have to input a cdkey when playing a uplay game on steam. There is no cdkey field, because that cd-key doesn't exist.
Steam has, as I said, totally gotten rid of cd-key registration for external services. For uplay it uses uplays API integration to directly register games. Other games, like Paradox ones, require linking your steam account to a Paradox account. Steam no longer allows devs to use cd key registration for external services and hasn't for literally years.
