Steam refunded me without me requesting it
I have just got an email from Steam saying they are refunding me, despite me not requesting it at all. I ordered the Steam Controller as its on deal and my money way taken from the account so why are they refunding me when i did not request it??. I have attempted to figure out how to contact support but I do not know how as the support sucks. What kind of company does not have a support contact number.

They continued to take orders despite not having enough stock so orders are being cancelled and refunded.

You’re being refunded because they ran out of stock. They can’t send you something they don’t have. You ordered too late, like many others did. The system was too slow to catch up with the massive amount of orders so this happens. Later orders are being cancelled because there’s not enough stock. Things like this happen during fire sales.

Also, a concept of "in stock" doesn't really exist for Steam games, so the shop frontend probably isn't really prepared for that.

But surely if the item is paid for, they have an obligation to honour it. If they don't have enough they should wait till more arrive and then send them out?

The contract is only completed when the item is shipped. The retailer has the legal right to cancel the contract at any point prior to shipping.

Out of stock isn't a new concept for Steam. Back in the day, they would often run out of keys for games they can't generate new keys for, Like EA games.

It’s already been said but no. It’s no different then if some retailer online lists a $1000 TV for a penny on accident and you order it. Even if you’re charged, they’re not obligated to sell it at that price because it was an obvious mistake. You’ll be refunded and that’s that. Unfortunate but it is what it is.

Plus, it looks like they’re doing this sale to dump their remaining supplies because the controller is discontinued, so chances are there isn't going to be any later controllers.

No they have an obligation to either deliver the item, a suitable replacement or give a full refund if they are unable to fulfill the order.

So even though it might not be what you want they have done what they are obligated to.
