Issues With PC Gaming In HDR On Samsung Q70R

Recently I bought a Samsung Q70R, and hdr looks great on things like Netflix And Youtube, but I cant get it working in games.

When I enable HDR in windows 10 and then go into a game, everything looks washed out with HDR enabled, and when I disable HDR in game (HDR is on in windows settings) it looks much better than with it on, though it doesnt look any different than with HDR disabled entirely in windows.

I havent tried a console in HDR as my ps4 is broken, I also havent tried other HDR content in windows, such as Netflix or Youtube.

What is going on here? I was really looking forward to HDR gaming as many big games support it now. Any help would be apreciated.

EDIT: I have read on other sites that its best to leave HDR disabled in windows as a game that supports it will automatically detect that the display is HDR capable, but this isnt true, at least for me. Without HDR enabled in windows, there isnt any options to enable it in game.

EDIT: I have tested an HDR youtube video and i have the same problem, a dim image with dull colours when HDR is enabled.

Your TV only supports HDR 1000, which is pretty much the same as HDR 10, max luminance of 1000 nits. For a decent HDR experience you're looking more towards 4000 nits.

Presumably you were talking about the Netflix and YouTube apps (built into the TV) when you said 'hdr looks great on things like Netflix and YouTube' so let's forget you said that. It kind of confuses the issue.

I'm not sure I can be of much help, and tbh, this would probably benefit being moved by a moderator to Hardware and Operating Systems, however...

* Make sure your HDMI lead isn't faulty, and make sure it's a HDMI 2.x lead.

Why?

Because HDMI 1.4 only supports 3840 × 2160 (4k) at 24, 25, and 30 Hz so if your graphics card is set to output a HDR signal at 3840 × 2160 / 60 Hz, maybe that's causing the loss of colour information? (This is speculation on my part.)

* Make sure your HDMI cable is plugged into the HDMI 4 socket on the TV. I just took a quick look through the manual for that set and it seems to indicate that only "HDMI 4 Port" supports 10 bit sampling (RGB 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2 & YCbCr 4:2:0) at 50/60 and 120 Hz.

I changes the colour settings in nvidia control panel after moving the HDMI cable into port 4, and when its set to RGB I can choose 8 bit colour and can set output dynamic range to full, but if i select ycbr422 i can selecr 8 10 or 12 bit colour but only a limites dynamic range, with 420 i can only choose 8 or 12 again with only limited range. None of these improved things though.

Even without HDR which is these colour settings would give the best image quality for games? Does HDR just not work at all for PC?

in my opinion games with HDR support look better than games without it, but some developers are better at implementing HDR than others. The best HDR games I've played are actually console games (Horizon Zero Dawn, Spiderman and RDR2 being notable).

Even if the HDR is not 'true' HDR, Netflix & YouTube on the PC should look the same as the Netflix & YouTube apps built into the TV so I don't think that's the issue. There's obviously a problem somewhere and I can't help wondering if there's a problem with your HDMI lead.

I thought there was a problem with it too when i tried to get Gsync to work, so i replaced it. Gsync still doesnt work but i dont get the issues i was having before. I dont have anything else to output an HDR signal as my ps4 is broken, but given its brand new, i dont think its the cable.

Use RGB, the other colour formats are compressed.
