Recently reformatted and getting disk write error trying to redownload my games.
I get it on BOTH my hard drives. Neither hard drive is malfunctioning. Blizzard's Battle.net client works fine for downloading games. The issue only happens with Steam.

On games with small files, I can constantly just tell it to restart and finish the game, but some games like Warhammer II which has large data packs won't download at all - the download fails at the first large file - a 4 gig audio pack with a write error.

Indeed.

I have managed to download CK2 and HoI4. Small games with small file sizes work fine. Only large games are having this problem. WHAT'S GOING ON :O.

Battle.net managed to download the entirety of WoW!

Start your system in safe mode (for obvious reasons with networking). Does it download then just fine?

Nope, safe mode did nothing.

NTFS

Yep. Everything was working fine before I reformatted. Considering, you know, Battle.net was able to download a hundred gigs of WoW, issue seems to be entirely with Steam. For some reason Steam can't write big files and I can't figure it out!

So I fixed the disk write error on Steam by

Installing all the drivers associated with my mobo from the Gigabyte site. These were ancient and I'm pretty sure Windows 10 had a good handle on things, because after installing these drivers my PC wouldn't boot even into BIOS.

Removed my CMOS battery, disconnected the hdds, removed the RAM and held down the power button to reset BIOS.

When that didn't work, I disassembled and reassembled my entire PC in case there was a loose wire.

Switched my SATA ports just in case it was a bad port.

Turned my PC back on, my BIOS was now suddenly reset and now my Steam games are downloading.

And the Intel Rapid Storage drivers are installed.

So I'm not sure what the fix was - it was either

Bad SATA port.

Loose wire somewhere in general.

MOBO was possessed and needed to reset the BIOS.

Intel SATA drivers

Perhaps this will aid someone Googling in the future... but probably not.
