accidentally downloaded a virus *please help*
Alright so I got a bunch of razer items this christmas and got everything to work except for these headphones which where giving me a very hard time. I went on razer's website to download drivers and such (razer.com) and upon clicking on the headphones icon it redirected me to another section of the razer website for drivers, and I downloaded the needed ones. well apparently about a hour later I was notified by windows defender that I downloaded a trojan virus. Windows defender told me that it prevented to program from running and qaurantined it. I then removed the virus from windows defender and well now im asking if im okay? Should I change passwords? Possibly reformat my pc? Please help!

Yes, if it is a real virus, you should change your passwords, also to protect steam, download the steam mobile authenticator on your phone.

Based on the information you’ve given me, I think you should be fine.

Download the malwarebytes free trial - https://www.malwarebytes.com/

If MWB finds nothing, you have nothing. If the file you downloaded came from razer.com, it's almost certainly a false positive. In future, check the signature of the downloaded file before you run it and ensure it has been signed by Razer.

If the download was from the official Razer website, it was probably just a false positive from Windows Defender. In that case, there is nothing to worry about.

If you want to make sure your PC is clean, download and run Malwarebytes. It can be used alongside Windows Defender.

Your responses are making me feel so much better! So I do sencerily thank you for that, however
the exact file that this trojan originated from was "razer synapse tournament drivers" likely from the razer surround sound program that I downloaded by clicking the first link that appeared when I looked up razor surround sound on google. The only thing that I qeustion is why would a official razor program have a virus contained within? I mean who the hell names some executable file "trojan" followed by a dot and some weird numbers and special characters? However I have heard that others where plauged with this very same issue. Could you possibly clear this up for me.

I have malwarebytes premuim and a ran a scan that came up clean funnily enough windows defender picked up the virus however malwarebytes didn't I feel like that is due to the fact that malwarebytes is made for malware and not viruses.

A virus is a type of malware. Malware is an umbrella term that refers to any malicious software.

I have another qeustion, as I was looking through windows defender I noticed that the trojan thing was under quarantined threats, and allowed threats. Although I never allowed it to run on my computer. Is this normal?

If it was a false positive, there would be no virus. Windows Defender might mistakingly think there is, when there isn't.
That could possibly be so, however one thing I am still very worried about is the fact that windows defender showed the virus under quarantined, and also shows it under allowed threats which really confused me since I never allowed it after it was identified as a threat
