The standard procedure is (that I use and recommend)...
Download > Pause > Exit Steam manually > Let files sync > Shutdown PC.
Follow that effectively and don't risk anything.
Note: Steam does save download progress but sudden shutdowns can cause MANY issues with files in general.
Steam downloads small delta patches that keep information about downloads - and more importantly the download progress.
Once these files are nuked, the DL progress will be nuked and though the files are intact, the download will restart.
Verifying local files won't assist there.
If the download takes long enough to really justify an overnight run (I'm certain, you would not do this for a mere 3-4 hour download), why not consider leaving it on charge while removing the battery? This way there's no risk to overcharge.
