Because Valve does not want you to. It also works as a link filter.
There is no 1st amendment rights (or any speech rights) on the Steam forums.
People don't need to swear to convey what they want to say.
There's absolutely no need to do so on public discussions.
Censoring profanity on the forums isn't "based on religion." It's based on acting like a mature adult. Also, using your own argument, if you want to swear then you should be "disciplined properly" or your parents didn't teach you how to act properly. Valve/Steam is not a government. They are not infringing on your "rights." You need to learn what the word "rights" means. Valve has the "right" to censor profanity on *their* forums.
1. Obviously Valve doesn't want you to. The question is why be so suppressive with no option for you own personal choice.
2. I never mentioned any rights, I merely stated that they are affecting our ability to speak freely.
3. Swearing is a personal choice. If you want to say something, you say it. Just the same way you felt the need to state three pointless ramarks that are either way too obvious, or taken out of context, or just plain irrelevant.
I will then restate the question: how the ♥♥♥♥ did ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ steam turn into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ piece of rubberized ♥♥♥♥♥-ass-♥♥♥♥♥-ass ♥♥♥♥ community for the most fearful of people?
Pardon my language!
1. Because it is their forum.
2. You say, "infringe on our speech," which relates to a right. You don't have that here.
3. Personal choice is the irrelevant part.
It has always been this way.
Refer to #2.
1: It's against Valve rules to swear, even when the words are censored it's a violation.
2: You have no right to speak freely on a privatly owned platform, Valves house, Valves rules.
3: No, not when you use a privately owned forum, then the owner decides what you can or can't say.
That is why there is no way to turn the filter off, users who like to talk like drunken sailors would see that as a "OK" to use profanity, and normal users would see more and more hearts in posts from immature people.
Civilized people don't need profanity to make a point.
Again, you claimed that if people swear then it's because their parents didn't teach them right and they aren't properly disciplined so according to your argument in your first post, your parents sucked at raising you and didn't discipline you properly.
If you want a "community" where you can act like an idiot then there's already one for people like you. It's called Facebook. Enjoy.
You are free not to use them if you don’t like how they are run.
1. Because you agreed to it.
2. You agreed to that happening too.
3. You're perfectly free to swear as much as you want as long as you're OK with it getting censored out. Why? Because you said you were OK with it.
The minute you agree to the SSA... yet again, as Valve get you to sign up to it every time you buy absolutely anything, you agree that your interaction with other users should be guided by basic etiquette. And if you don't understand what that means then they even gave you this handy guide on the subject:

Now, you got two choices - keep your word or just keep whining. It doesn't really matter which option you choose, the filter's staying.
This is a discussion, not whining. I personally don't swear very much but the whole idea is why no choice? Oh ya, because they said so. Such a dull answer. Also, obvious one again, when you install any app you agree to its terms lol, and obviously there is nothing to do about it. I'm gonna ask again, does anyone have an opinion on why steam would force the filter upon us without giving us the option to turn off the feature?
Because it's against the rules to use profanity.
