installing on F, errors aplenty
Hey all,
the error i am having deals with my external hard drive. i have steam installed on my c drive, and am trying to create a library in my f drive, a four tb external. The error i am seeing says the drive isn't writeable, but i know this isn't true. there are several other programs on the drive that had to be written on there, and i even had steam on that drive this morning. another issue led me to reinstalling, and since then i cant seem to get the program to write a secondary library to the drive i have dedicated to video games. i spent my whole tuesday reading articles and trying all sorts of weird fixes, from changing the permissions in the properties of the folder i was installing into to reinstalling steam on my f drive, which presented me with another error where steam couldn't connect to the internet to update for some reason. if you could solve either of these issues i could get games installing on F again, and this is crucial to my continued growing library of over 200

I had a problem like that with my external HDD. Apparently Steam doesn't like it when you appoint a drive as library folder (example: F:\).
So I created a folder named Steam on the drive, made sure it wasn't read-only and then directed Steam through the settings to that folder. It worked for me after that.

I tried to create a folder in the drive, and it won’t come off the read only attribute, I changed my permission settings on the folder but they revert after I close it

Steam doesn’t support external drives for libraries

Doing so will create tons of headaches for you

It has worked before. It was working even this morning until I had to reinstall steam for another issue

move something to drive example: make a test.txt file in your desktop and move it to F

Interesting suggestion cipher, i think we’re getting closer to the root of the problem. Trying to move a file into the drive doesn’t work, I don’t have the permission I need. I don’t know why, since I’m an admin on my system, does anybody know how to actually change permissions, as I’ve been trying that as well and nothing seems to work there either

Go to My PC then right click your hard drive then propeties then security check your perms then config it

So here’s one for ya, I found that page, administrators should have full access, and users do not, but I can’t seem to change the settings. The tick boxes are all faded and I can’t seem to enable their configuration

Honestly I’m glad this is tough, I’d feel like an idiot if it was so simple as to be solved immediately

I can’t edit that one, all the tick boxes are faded

I can edit the security permissions for everything else, but not that
