Can I revert to an older version of the Steam client?
After an update to the steam client a couple of days ago, whenever I start my Civilization V game it constantly crashes at the startup screen. As the only change to my system was the update to the steam client the obvious move is to reverse that change and see if the game still has a problem.
So are there any instructions on how to get older steam clients running?

You can revert the UI, yes.

If you're referring to the older UI, then yes, you can.

Use the launch parameters -nochatui & -nofriendsui in the target line of Steam's shortcut.

There's no option to roll back to a previous version of the client updates.

I have tried those two parameters on my Steam shortcut and yes the UI changes but my Civ game still crashes. So as that was the only change to my system that would indicate that (at the moment) I have an unplayable game due to the Steam client changes

Ask in that games own forum as it is not a Steam issue.

In most cases, game crashes have nothing to do with steam itself, not to mention an UI update.

You should verify your game’s integrity.
Go to your library, right click the game, properties, verify game integrity.

Some updates have. Especially in the recent Chat updates. Noted in the bug forum and the main forums for the last 3 months.

Very unlikely in this case, or plenty of people would be complaining.

Steam devs resolved the issue already.

I can confirm this issue is also occuring with me for HOMM5 and Civ, Since the last steam update a lot of games are also extremely choppy and often stop responding for short periods of time. Not a computer issue and since both games were running fine 2 days ago and have not been updated I don't see it being a game issue.

Sorry for the double post, edit button keeps causing steam to crash. Turning off steam overlay appears to have fixed this from a quick test. Or at least has made games run a lot better. Haven't had any stop responding yet.
Thank You Naka
Yes turning off the Steam Overlay did fix it (at least for the moment)

*facepalm*
I can't believe it that this solution from 2018 helped me out more than 300 comments from varying players (some who claim to be "Steam experts") within my own discussion topic where I asked for help. Thanks, mate.
