Just like some games may not allow ALT+F4, to avoid people rage-quiting in MP games.
CTRL + ALT + DEL > Task Manager, then switch to whatever you wish. Helps to open firstly, then go down and find it in notification bar, right click on it, and click "Always on Top" so that is enabled. This should help ensure that when you switch to Task Manager that it will appear over-top of your game pretty much no matter what.
Best bet is always have Task Manager opened, just minimize it, then u can always get back to it.
You can also try CTRL + SHIFT + ESC
which directly launches Task Manager.
Some games will simply crash if you tab-out or switch apps.
When you find a game like that, simply try toggle it into Windowed Mode first (ALT+Enter) before you ALT+Tab to anything, or CTRL+ALT+DEL, etc...
For problem #2 ~ well find out whats crashing and why.
Look in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application
However for this issue, just for the sake of having it, it's why I always have PC's setup for "Power Button = Shutdown" set in the Power Options in Control Panel. This way if the PC is truly acting up bad, I can press the power button (do not hold it) and it should run through the normal WinOS shutdown process. Unless it's completely hard-locked with frozen screen. That is usually a faulty GPU or Power Supply; but it can happen for many other reasons too.
Well that sucks...we never have this problem in Windows 7, I know about the Alt F4 thing, but not able to press Wiindows / Alt + Tab / Switch to Desktop whenever we like, that never happen before to me in any games.....
No the game didn't crash when I Tab Out or Switch Apps. What I'm saying is. Let me write them in procedures so it's easier to understand since it's really hard for me to explain honestly. So what happen was.
1) Game Crashes, screen frozen.
2) Ctrl + Alt + Delete > Task Manager
3) Alt + Tab, switch to Task Manager ( Or any other App / Program ), won't work.
4) I won't able to switch to anything, I don't even have a mouse cursor to move around.
I will only see my bottom Task Bar, no mouse cursor, so I cannot even't close the game on the Task Bar.
5) Presses Windows key, Start Menu pops up, but no mouse cursor cannot shut down PC that way.
6) Ctrl + Alt + Delete again, from there as you know you can select Task Manager, Log Off, Shut Down PC etc right ? So the onyl way to fix it, is I Log Off then Log back in, everything be close and it fixes the problem.
So is this normal ?? Or is it the game that causing it ?? Or is there some sort of settings I must turn on or off ? I never have this sort of problems before in Windows 7 even my game crashed so hard....I will always able to switch to Task Manager and still have mouse cursor and just end task.
EDIT : O you're confused with what I was saying. It was my game that crahsed actually. I guarantee it, but my PC is still responsive. It's only that I couldn't close the game. And my mouse cursor be missing and I cannot do anything else. But my PC isn't frozen / crashed, just the game.
Again, check Event Viewer and check the error logs in there.
Yes you can close the game, get to Task Manager and then close the game, not hard.
Well that's going to be difficult, I couldn't remember what it was ! And the crashes never happen all the time and as I mentioned ( I think I mentioned ) so far it only happens during TES Oblivion and Skyrim....
Try to take a moment to re-create the same scenario and see if that issue still occurs.
Then check Event Viewer.
Easy way to get to that is right-click the startmenu (or Winkey+X) and go from there.
Or click the Windows/Cortana Search bar and start to type out Event Viewer and it should popup as an available app to click on.
Everything pertaining to "Apps" would be under Windows Logs > Application
I be playing a lot of Skyrim now lately, maybe if it do happen again I will post it here.
If possible maybe you could keep track of this post like a day or two see if I have anything come up. When I say I be playing a lot of Skyrim, I do mean A LOT lol !
Actually I been on other forums as well. I found out that I'm not the only one facing these issues.
There's one person here on HARDFORUM
https://hardforum.com/threads/killing-a-frozen-program-when-you-cant-see-task-manager.1819949/
We had same problem lol, this is exactly what I'm facing when my Skyrim / Oblivion crashed.
And seems like some others used the same method as I did, Log Off and Log On again lol....
I think this could be a Windows 10 thing....real shame, I mean the game crashing is my fault since Skyrim is moded but Oblivion wasn't though. So no surprise if it crashes...but not able to switch to Task Manager I say it's entire Windows 10 fault, since we can't even do most of the switching like we were able to do in Windows 7....
Some did mention set Task Manager > Options > Always On Top will help in future.
Even so I will look out for that Error in Event Viewer just in case.
Then you CAN switch to it, no problems.
Seems bit overkill lol....but since it only happens in Skyrim and Oblivion ( which I don't even play now actually ) I think I will stick to the current solutions first. But Tks for the info.
I just wanna find out if it's my PC problem or it's just the Windows / the g ame that's at fault.
I'm bit OCD when it comes to my PC running smoothly lol....
Maybe if a game uses "Exclusive Full Screen" perhaps; that mode locks the user out of using such shortcuts usually; such as ALT+TAB or Winkey+D; but usually CTRL+ALT+DEL should always work.
