trouble to download on to HDD, it takes upwards of 10 hours for 100MB
okay this may be a long one.

general specs:

- Windows 10, self built PC tower

- I have one Samsung SSD 850 PRO 1TB and a Seagate FireCuda 2TB (ST2000DX002-2DV164)

- my internet never has problems, (thats not the source, trust me I checked) my average speed is 200 Mbps down / 20 Mbps up.

- this has been a problem for me for the last year, since I got a HDD

so my problem is about download, preallocating and installing speeds when downloading to my HDD. when I update or download games to my SSD everything works fine. I get stable and fast downloads 9/10. but then I update/ download a game to my HDD and the "Preallocating" for 100-400 MB updates has taken up to 6 hours. after that it starts downloading. veeeeeeeery slowly at about a few KB every 5 seconds while the disk usage spikes up to maybe a few hundred KB and then quickly tapers off to a few KB. then it shoots back up only to taper off again and repeat that. the download is finished after maybe 2 hours give or take.

but its not over yet. after that comes an installing phase of about another 3-6 hours.

keep in mind these numbers are guesstimated, but I think its accurate enoug.

and I can at any point if theres another game to update on my SSD change over to that download (oh by the way switching/ stopping downloads causes stem to freeze for 5-10 seconds and crash if I touch it) and it downloads quickly as usual.

I tried searching forums for ages and have never found anyone with the same problem and the fixes of people with similar-ish problems never fixed it for me

thanks for any help

EDIT: so it seems I fixed the problem by turning off "fast startup" feature in the energy settings. I have NO IDEA at all how the two would even come close to interacting with each other but as soon as I disabled that the downloads that had piled up over the last week all finished in a few minutes.

SSD's have better performance altogether.

Your HDD may have some bad sectors causing the various performance issues.

Run a disk check through the command prompt and see what you get.

I'd also recommend defragging the drive.

The SATA cable between MB and HDD might be broken, or perhaps just not properly inserted.
Try reinserting the cable on both ends, and see if that helps.
If you have a spare cable, try swaping to that instead of the one installed.
Make sure the cable is not bent in a very sharp angle, as that can break it.

Testing the drive can be done using Seagates Seatools program.
