Steam launching into blank blue screen
Every time I launch Steam it does the normal splash screen, connects but then just remains on a blank blue screen (not the windows BSOD, just the blank Steam big picture background). The curser changes to the Steam one and if I click or press anything I get the normal Steam sound effects but I can’t do anything.

If I riight click in the icon in the task bar I have a list of options but the only one that actually does anything is Exit Steam

I think the problem is something to do with launching in Big Picture mode but I have no option to change this. I just want to launch into normal Steam

Any ideas without having to re-install?

Are there any hot keys that will revert back to normal view rather than Big Picture?

Hello there,

I noticed this was happening whenever I was plugging in some secondary monitors with my laptop, as far as I can remember. My hypothesis is that there must be some configuration conflicts that emerge when you're using a different monitor. Let me know if that sounds any familiar to your case.

Anyway, following this train of though, I went to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config

and reanmed the file "config.vdf" to "config.vdf.bak" (".bak" meaning backup). By the next start steam resets all configs to stock and things show up again. There must be some configuration that I have not found that must be the problem. You can actually open up config.vdf with a text editor and see what's inside. Now the task upon us is to find the exact conflicts.

Is it possible to tag steam support here? (supposing they give a damn)

Yes, Alt+enter. That was not working with me though. It used to close Steam unexpectedly when I did.

Hey man, that helped. I wonder how did you found this out? are you a computer engineer or just an individual interested in computer files or such?

No problem man. I figured it had something to do with graphics configuration and devices as the error happened when I switched monitors. I'm not a Comp engineer, but I do know my way around some stuff. I think you can keep copies of the config files for each monitor you have, so that's one way of working around it.

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config and rename config.vdf, then restart steam.

This happened to me and I used this and it worked. Thank you! I think what may have caused the issue is that I'd changed my password on my phone and perhaps that caused an issue when next opening Steam on my computer. When I used the above fix, although my config file was kept somewhere else, Steam opened as normal and I just had to log in.

Also try the unplug and re-insert them all USB device like mouse keyboard , dongle or gamepad controll , this is know as reset USB configuration. ( i dont say its this , but take 2 sec to perform and ruleout its not that. ) dont forget steam user that in big screen mode and it have work for some, so steam dont crash, i have not seen BSOD and linux might have diffrent issue.

but to sit and think you get a error code on this , forget it, noone has seen a msg with keyboard or mouse crash report then its the USB controll on pc board that has a issue.

this has been seen before on other steam user steam total crash nothing work, and we suggest remove all other things that not needed to start steam. and then it start working, and we all scrates our heads here. and say what the hell just happend here.

and it dont make it better or should i say maybe should work now because steam has update alot of controller on that subject lately so things work in-client, but again this can also give issue with current configurations.

see it as try and ruleout its not that , and even sit and explan this take longer then just try it.
( this was learn from the past first USB printer or scanner installation reset USB configuration. )
and this is why i wrote this, so its not forgotten, not many of us left from that era that know that issue before.
